October is one of Asheville's most spectacular months. With warm days, cool evenings, and crisp, clear skies, it's the perfect time to enjoy the fall colors that make our mountain home a sought-after leaf-peeping destination! One of the best parts of living in Grove Park is that we don't even have to leave the neighborhood to experience the glory. Our landscapes come alive with the fiery reds, oranges, and golds of native maples, the scarlet leaves of sourwoods, the deep purple of black gums, and the rich bronze tones of our majestic white oaks. If you've been thinking about planting a tree, fall is one of the best times to do it. Warm soil encourages root growth while cooler temperatures help new trees establish before winter arrives.

The beauty continues with native shrubs such as American beautyberry, which glows with vivid purple berries; Virginia sweetspire blazing orange-red; fothergilla and witch hazel dressed in brilliant golds and coppers; and oakleaf hydrangeas showing off their striking maroon foliage and dried flower heads that last well into winter.

These plants have done far more than decorate our yards. They've hosted butterfly and moth caterpillars, fed pollinators with nectar, and produced berries and acorns for birds, squirrels, chipmunks, bears, wild turkeys, and countless other creatures.

Then the leaves begin to fall—just as nature intended. Fallen leaves nourish the soil, protect plant roots, and provide winter shelter for butterflies, native bees, fireflies, and many other beneficial insects that will emerge next spring. If we remove every leaf, we often remove the next generation of the wildlife we hope to enjoy.

If possible, leave your leaves in garden beds, beneath trees, or in a simple enclosure made from T-posts and chicken wire. By spring, they'll become rich leaf mold—a free source of beneficial mulch and fertilizer.

Ecological gardening is truly a win-win. By doing a little less, we gain healthier soil, more butterflies, more bees, more fireflies, and a landscape that works beautifully with nature instead of against it.
