An Adoption Tail: From Foster to Forever
When the Pica family welcomed a foster dog named Salem into their home this spring, they knew their goal was simple: help her find the perfect forever family.
The Picas occasionally foster dogs through Lab Rescue LRCP and have a rescue Labrador of their own, Pepper. In May, they welcomed Salem, a sweet three-year-old silver chocolate Labrador who had been surrendered by her previous owners and was looking for a forever family.
Salem quickly won everyone over with her gentle personality, love of snuggles, and friendly nature. Recognizing what a wonderful addition she could be to a family, the Pica family shared her story on the Hallsley Facebook page, where several neighbors expressed interest in meeting her.
One of those families was the Cheatham family, who have called Hallsley home for the past 10 years. Seth and Pae Cheatham, along with their four daughters—Olivia, Stella, Ava, and Berkley—have always considered dogs an important part of their family. They already shared their home with Winston, a two-year-old Labradoodle rescue, but after losing their beloved dog Brady last fall, they found themselves considering whether they were ready to welcome another dog into their lives.
The timing couldn’t have been better.
“When we met Salem for the first time, I knew instantly that she would be the perfect addition to our family,” Pae said. “She was shy but so affectionate at the same time. By the end of our visit, she was playing fetch with the girls, and we were all completely in love with her.”
Before making anything official, there was one very important family member left to impress: Winston.
A second meeting was arranged so the two dogs could get acquainted, and any concerns quickly disappeared.
“Winston and Salem shared the same energy and instantly connected as if they’d known each other for years,” Pae said.
Watching them play together, it became clear that this was the perfect match.
Soon afterward, Salem officially joined the Cheatham family and received her new name: Willow.
Today, Willow is thriving in her forever home. Her days are filled with backyard adventures chasing Winston, tug-of-war battles over their favorite toy, endless games of fetch, and plenty of snuggles. While she was initially shy and timid, Willow has blossomed into a confident and affectionate companion whose favorite place to rest is curled up beside one of her humans.
Willow’s story is a reminder that wonderful dogs are waiting for homes every day. Through foster families and adopters, Lab Rescue LRCP saves nearly 800 dogs each year and helps Labrador Retrievers and Lab mixes find loving homes throughout Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and North Carolina. The organization relies on volunteers and foster families to provide dogs with a safe place to stay while they wait for their forever homes.
If you’re considering adding a dog to your family, adoption is a wonderful option. Sometimes, those happy endings happen a little closer to home than expected. In Willow’s case, her forever family was waiting just down the road in Hallsley.
