A LEGACY OF SERVICE

For nearly five decades, Bruce Young has been a steady presence in the Harwich Fire Department — a firefighter, leader, and friend whose commitment to service began long before he first put on the uniform. Bruce dedicated his life to helping others and strengthening the community he loves.

The retirement of a firefighter is more than the end of a career — it is a celebration of a lifetime of service, sacrifice, and dedication to the community. For Bruce Young, receiving his helmet from the Fire Chief marked both a closing chapter and a tribute to decades of unwavering commitment. From his earliest days to becoming a trusted mentor and leader, Bruce leaves behind a fire department — and a town — made stronger by his presence.

Bruce’s journey with the Town of Harwich began in 1978, but his passion for firefighting started long before that. Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, he was often seen riding his bike to fire calls, eager to help. His humble beginnings as a call firefighter assigned to Aerial Company 1 laid the foundation for a legacy of service that would span more than four decades.

Over the years, Bruce contributed in countless ways: as a firefighter, an emergency medical technician, and as President of the Fire Association. He was always ready to lend a hand — whether assisting fellow members, supporting the department’s needs, or helping a neighbor in the community. His commitment went far beyond the call of duty, earning him the respect of colleagues and residents alike.

Bruce Young’s retirement is a moment to honor not just his career, but the positive impact he has made on the Harwich Fire Department and the town he loves. Through his dedication, leadership, and generosity, he has left a lasting legacy, ensuring the department is stronger and better prepared for the future.

Congratulations Bruce!
