Backyard Birdies Brings Fun
Hidden Lake neighbors Melissa and Brad Hood are bringing families, friends, and coworkers together through Backyard Birdies, a premium mobile mini golf experience designed for all ages.
Sometimes the best business ideas begin in the most unexpected ways.
For Hidden Lake neighbors Melissa and Brad Hood, what started as a fun birthday party idea for their son eventually evolved into one of Southeast Michigan’s most unique mobile entertainment businesses.
Today, their company, Backyard Birdies, is bringing laughter, competition, connection, and
unforgettable memories to backyard parties, graduations, family reunions, corporate events, and celebrations all across the region.
And fittingly enough, it all began with family.
The Hood family has called Hidden Lake home for the past seven years, and like many neighbors here, they were drawn not only to the beauty of the neighborhood, but to the people within it. Melissa shared that one of their favorite parts of living here is the genuine sense of community and connection they’ve found.
“We have made friends who have become extended family — always willing to help, celebrate, and support,” she shared.
That spirit of gathering, celebrating, and spending meaningful time together has naturally become woven into the heart of Backyard Birdies as well.
At first glance, Backyard Birdies may sound like simply a mobile mini golf rental company—but after speaking with Melissa and learning more about the business, it became clear that what they are really creating is an experience. One centered around connection, interaction, laughter, and bringing people together in a world where meaningful face-to-face moments can sometimes feel increasingly rare.
Their premium mobile putt-putt course is expertly designed to challenge all skill levels, from first-time players to serious golf enthusiasts. Featuring nine unique holes complete with hills, ramps, obstacles, pipes, and creative challenges, the course quickly becomes the center of attention wherever it goes.
And apparently, it’s not quite as easy as it looks.
“Fun fact — across all of our rentals, no one has received a perfect par yet,” Melissa shared with a laugh. “We weren’t kidding — this course really does challenge the most expert of golfers! Will you be the first to get 9 hole-in-ones?”
That playful competitive spirit is part of what makes the experience so memorable. Kids become determined to conquer the next obstacle. Adults suddenly find themselves fully invested in sinking the perfect shot. Grandparents join in. Coworkers begin cheering each other on. And before long, the entire event starts revolving around the course.
But what makes Backyard Birdies especially unique is the flexibility and accessibility they’ve built into the business. In addition to full-service event rentals, they also offer a DIY rental option specifically designed for neighbors and local gatherings. Families can pick up and return the course themselves for a full-day rental, creating an affordable way to bring a full-scale entertainment experience right into their own backyard.
Melissa and Brad describe Backyard Birdies as a business built on both “big business expertise and family values,” and that balance truly shines through in the way they operate. While the experience feels polished and professional, there is still something deeply personal and community-oriented about it all.
In fact, one of the most meaningful aspects of the business is the role their own children play in helping run it.
“This is officially their first job,” Melissa shared proudly.
Their children, Harper and Hudson, help vacuum the course after rentals, arrange the colorful golf balls before events, and hand out putters during larger gatherings. While the business certainly brings joy to customers, Melissa and Brad also recognize the life lessons it is teaching their children behind the scenes—responsibility, work ethic, communication, teamwork, and the importance of creating positive experiences for others.
As a parent myself, I absolutely loved hearing this part of their story. There is something incredibly special about businesses that become family endeavors—especially when children are invited into the process in meaningful ways. It becomes about so much more than income or entrepreneurship. It becomes about legacy, confidence, shared experiences, and building something together.
And while the course itself is undeniably fun, some of the most touching moments come from the stories customers create around it.
Melissa shared one particularly memorable rental for a 60th wedding anniversary celebration where each hole featured photos and signage highlighting different decades of the couple’s life together. Guests moved from hole to hole not only playing golf, but reminiscing, laughing, and celebrating a lifetime of memories.
Another standout moment came during a corporate event where the company’s HR manager later shared that every single employee left their desk to participate.
“They were so excited with this level of employee engagement,” Melissa explained. “The holes were strategically set up in different departments to encourage cross-collaboration and connection.”
In many ways, that story perfectly captures what Backyard Birdies really represents.
Yes, it is mini golf.
But it is also an invitation for people to pause, interact, laugh, and reconnect with one another.
And in today’s world, that matters more than ever.
Of course, no strong brand is complete without a little personality—and Backyard Birdies certainly has that too. Melissa laughed while sharing that their branded “Birdies” hats have become surprisingly popular around town.
“We think our swag is pretty fun,” she said. “Perhaps the brand will go viral?”
Honestly, after hearing neighbors talk about their experiences and seeing how much joy this business brings to gatherings, I would not be surprised.
What I appreciated most after learning more about Melissa and Brad is that their business reflects the exact kind of entrepreneurial spirit we love highlighting in this community. It is creative. Family-centered. Community-minded. It encourages people to gather and celebrate together. And perhaps most importantly, it was born not from chasing trends, but from simply wanting to create meaningful experiences with the people they love most.
That authenticity is hard to manufacture—and it is exactly why businesses like Backyard Birdies resonate so deeply.
Whether it is a graduation party, birthday celebration, neighborhood gathering, family reunion, corporate event, or summer lake party, Backyard Birdies has found a way to turn ordinary events into something interactive, memorable, and joy-filled for all ages.
And who knows? Maybe one of our Hidden Lake neighbors will finally be the first to conquer all nine holes with a perfect score.
