Built With Purpose
Guided by compassion, faith and a lifelong desire to care for others, Dr. Ruth Kuczma has built a practice where relationships come first, confidence grows naturally and every patient is cared for as an individual.
Long before Dr. Ruth Kuczma ever cared for patients, she carried a toy doctor's bag everywhere she went.
Growing up in Sterling Heights, Michigan, she always knew she wanted a career in medicine. What she couldn't have known was the path that would eventually lead her there.
After graduating from the University of Detroit Mercy's Physician Assistant program, Dr. Kuczma began her career at the Cleveland Clinic in critical care and acute care surgery. Those years challenged her professionally and personally, teaching her clinical excellence while reinforcing something she still believes today: every patient has a story, and taking the time to truly listen matters.
Working alongside plastic surgeons eventually introduced her to dermatology and aesthetic medicine, where she discovered a field that combined medicine, artistry and lasting patient relationships.
Years later, while navigating one of the most challenging seasons of her life, she quietly earned her Doctor of Medical Science degree.
"I wasn't doing it for recognition," she said. "I wanted to accomplish it for myself—and for that little girl who carried the doctor's bag everywhere she went."
Eventually, life brought Dr. Kuczma back home to Michigan. After settling in the Plymouth/Northville area, she opened Aesthetic Atelier Med Spa & Wellness in South Lyon.
Looking back, she laughs at how unexpected it all feels.
"Years before opening my practice, I remember looking at South Lyon with a realtor and never imagining I'd one day own a business here," she said. "Today, I truly can't picture building my practice anywhere else. This community has welcomed me with open arms, and it's been incredible to grow alongside it."
Opening her own practice was a leap of faith. As a single mom, there were moments of uncertainty, including wondering whether purchasing her first laser was the biggest financial mistake she'd ever made. But she believed in what she was building and continued moving forward.
Her children have been part of that journey from the very beginning, even helping paint the office before it opened.
"Building Aesthetic Atelier has never just been about creating a business," she said. "It's been about creating something my children can one day look at and be proud of."
Ask Dr. Kuczma what makes her practice different, and she doesn't begin by talking about treatments.
"This practice was never built around Botox, filler, lasers or skincare," she said. "It was built around people."
That philosophy influences every patient experience.
Rather than starting with procedures, she starts with a conversation. She wants to understand what brought someone through the door, what they're hoping to accomplish and how they want to feel before discussing any treatment options.
"One of the most common things I hear is, 'I just don't feel like what I see in the mirror matches how I feel inside,'" she said.
For Dr. Kuczma, aesthetic medicine isn't about changing who someone is. It's about helping people feel like the healthiest, most confident version of themselves while preserving what makes them unique.
"The greatest transformations are measured in confidence," she said.
That approach also means being honest, even when it isn't the easiest answer.
If a treatment isn't in someone's best interest, or if waiting is the better option, she'll say so.
That commitment to trust has become one of the strongest foundations of her practice. Many new patients come through referrals from family members, friends, coworkers and neighbors, while others travel from across the state—and even out of state—to see her. To Dr. Kuczma, every referral is a reminder that trust is something earned.
Outside the practice, her greatest joy is being mom to her two children.
"Everything I do, from opening this business to continuing my education to working long hours, is ultimately for them," she said.
She hopes they grow up knowing that dreams are worth pursuing, meaningful things take time to build, and that faith, perseverance and hard work can carry you through even the most uncertain seasons.
Looking back, Dr. Kuczma describes her journey as "anything but linear," and she's grateful for that.
Every chapter has taught her something different: resilience, humility, compassion, clinical excellence and the courage to keep moving forward, even when the outcome wasn't guaranteed.
"I don't look at where I am today as having 'arrived,'" she said. "I hope I never do. Life is always evolving, and I believe we're meant to keep learning, growing and becoming better versions of ourselves."
That perspective carries into the advice she shares with every patient.
"Aging is a privilege that many people never get to experience," she said. "While there's nothing wrong with wanting to look and feel your best, I hope we never lose sight of the fact that our worth has never been determined by our reflection."
Looking back, life didn't unfold the way Dr. Kuczma expected.
"But at its core," she reflected, "it became exactly what I had always hoped for. I truly believe God has been guiding every step of the journey, and I can't wait to see where the next chapter leads."
It's that quiet faith, genuine compassion and commitment to building relationships—not simply providing treatments—that continue to shape Aesthetic Atelier and the experience every patient receives when they walk through its doors.
