Some dogs come into our lives quietly, and others arrive with an energy that changes everything. Calvin T-Bone Castro - the name as unforgettable as the dog himself - joined our family in 2014. My husband picked out Calvin's name, as all of our dogs have a food as their middle name. Calvin's older brother (RIP), Hogan was named Hogan Sandwich. Our little Scottie dog is named Lenny Spaghetti, and our newest member is Toby Ham-Hawk.
My husband saw Calvin first, on a farm in Oakdale, California. He fell in love instantly. When I met the puppy pack, my favorite was the one who would not get out of the baby swimming pool. That was Calvin! And even now, nearly twelve years later, he is still the dog who will always choose the water - especially if there's a tennis ball involved.
As a puppy, Calvin would proudly trot outside to retrieve the newspaper. We called him "the paper boy." From the start, he had a sweetness about him - a gentleness, a spark - that made him impossible not to love.

But Calvin's story would soon become one of resilience too.
When he was four years old, our family experienced a terrifying accident. My son was driving along a country road when another vehicle suddenly cut him off. His truck flipped, and in the chaos, Calvin's leg went though the window. The ER vet fought hard to save it, but the damage from the shattered glass was too severe. We were shaken, grateful that our kids were unharmed, and heartbroken for Calvin.
Yet Calvin, true to who he is, met this moment with unbelievable courage. Within weeks of his amputation, he learned to navigate stairs again. Soon he was jogging on a leash, then diving back into our swimming pool the moment his stitches were removed.
Today, Calvin is a seasoned camper, hiker, and snuggler. He curls into sleeping bags, uses an old ottoman as his step into bed, and approaches every adventure with joy. Watching him run a trail on three legs is a sight that inspires everyone who sees him.
At a 9/11 memorial run, a veteran missing a leg approached him and said "I feel you, buddy." It was a moment of connection as powerful as it was simple - two survivors, recognizing strength in each other.
Children love him too. They always get a kick out of him, stopping to ask questions about his missing leg. And every time, Calvin teaches them the same beautiful lesson: being different makes you special.

Calvin is special. He always has been. And in his quiet, determined, joyful way, he helps others feel special too.
