LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE : A Guide to Mental Health and Wellness
Provided by Advanced Psychiatry of Elgin
Why should I care for my mental health?
Talking about mental health isn’t always easy. For many, seeking help can still feel “taboo” or uncomfortable, but it shouldn’t be. Mental health
challenges are just as real and deserving of care as physical ones. Taking that first step is an act of strength and self-advocacy, not weakness.
Why do some people hesitate to get help?
Often, it comes down to fear of being judged or fear of what we might uncover about ourselves. It’s common to try to “power through” tough emotions or push them aside. But when we bottle things up for too long, those feelings can eventually overflow and become overwhelming. Reaching out early, building a support system, and addressing emotions head-on can make all the difference.
How common is this?
Mental health conditions affect people from every background, age, gender, culture, and lifestyle. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NAMI), about 2.1 million people in Illinois experience a mental health condition, and more than half a million report needing help but not receiving it. You are far from alone, and help is available.
How to Ask for Help
It’s never too late to reach out. If you’re ever in an immediate crisis, call 911 right away. For emotional support, the National Mental Health Hotline (988) is available 24/7. If you’re feeling stuck or need someone to talk to, therapy can offer perspective and relief. Counselors and licensed clinical social workers provide a safe space to work through life’s challenges. For those who may need additional support, psychiatrists can help explore medication options. And if traditional treatments haven’t worked, there are newer, non-invasive options such as TMS
(Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) that have helped many patients find lasting relief.
Building a Self-Care Toolkit
Caring for your mental health also means caring for yourself every day. Simple practices like journaling, meditation, or mindful breathing can help you stay grounded. Prioritize exercise, nutrition, and hydration, and try to keep a healthy balance between your personal and professional life. Learning to set boundaries, especially at work, and knowing when to say “no” are key parts of protecting your peace and maintaining your energy.
What to Expect on Your Journey
Healing isn’t always a straight line. There will be good days and hard ones, and that’s okay. What matters is staying consistent, being kind to yourself, and celebrating small victories along the way. Surround yourself with a care team and loved ones you trust, and remember that progress, no matter how small, still counts.
