Giving Athletes Something to Smile About
Special Olympics Colorado

Hello, Hilltop neighbors. My name is Dr. Allen Vean. I am a lifelong Hilltop resident, being blessed to reside in the home that my parents built in 1956. As a “graduated” (retired) pediatric dentist, I was able to treat many patients with both mental and physical disabilities. Nine years ago, I received a telephone call from my daughter, who at the time was working for Special Olympics of Colorado, that a dental screening event was taking place and that help was needed. That was the day that I became involved in a truly incredible organization.
Special Olympics' mission is to provide year-round coaching, sports training, and athletic competition in various Olympic sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The Colorado section provides many games and competitions for these athletes. I am part of the Healthy Athletes program which provides screenings in various medical disciplines. As a clinical director of the Healthy Smiles section, we complete dental screenings with appropriate referrals when problems are diagnosed. In addition, the program fabricates mouthguards on-site for the flag football program.
Our family involvement included my grandson starting a program at his elementary school called, “Red Shirt Rookies,” which took place after school hours with students working with other students with intellectual disabilities in a variety of sports. His sister continued the tradition when he transitioned to middle school.
The motto of Special Olympics is, “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” Hopefully, our family is making a difference in the lives of adults and children who have long been in need. Please consider volunteering or donating at www.specialolympicsco.org.
