Better Than Par
Birdie and Bogey Keep the Lanes Laughing
The Lanes have a tradition of giving their dogs golf-related names. Brent is a big golfer and Colleen plays on and off. They named their first Wheaten Terrier Mulligan, and after that decided each dog would have a golf-related name. Bogey, also a Wheaten Terrier, came along 10 years ago. After Mulligan passed away six years ago, the Lanes got Birdie, a tricolor Cavalier King Charles.
“We thought about Divot and Bunker. Once you start going…,” Colleen says.
Bogey came from Hollywood Wheatens in Murfreesboro, TN. He is the alpha dog of the house. According to Colleen, Bogey keeps the six-year-old Cavalier Birdie in line. “He doesn’t want her to bark,” says Colleen. “Birdie barks at birds, dogs, animals on TV. He trains her for us.”
The Wheaten Terrier is also a pleaser and athletic. The Lanes currently live at the corner of Farmington Lane and East Brookhaven Drive. Before moving to this home, their kids Pearce, now a freshman at Washington and Lee University, and Kate, a junior at The Westminster Schools, had a treehouse in the backyard of their last property. Bogey would climb to the top of the treehouse and jump out, down to the ground.
Like many athletic humans, the pup has had two knee replacements. “Bogey tore both of his ACLs; he tore one and then the other,” Colleen says. It might sound unusual, but ACL tears are becoming more common in active dogs. Bogey is still active and walks around the neighborhood with Birdie, Colleen, and Brent.
When Mulligan passed away, Colleen says Brent was convinced the Lanes had become a one-dog family. Kate had a different idea. “She put together a PowerPoint presentation that proved she needed a lap dog,” says Colleen. “She had little pictures of different Cavaliers and said she wanted something she could hold.” The Lanes found Birdie at Monticello Cavaliers in Monticello, GA.
Unlike Bogey who wants to please, Birdie does whatever she wants. Colleen jokes that if Birdie didn’t sleep in her crate every night, the dog would be in her and Brent’s bed at their heads. Birdie loves to have her belly rubbed and will roll over any time for anyone, including painters or other workers who come to the house and neighbors the Lanes pass on their walks. “Life is good always for her and everyone loves her,” Colleen adds.
Bogey and Birdie both enjoy salmon treats from Trader Joe’s. When the family has salmon or rotisserie chicken for dinner, the dogs always get some.
The Lanes’ lives have been enriched by both pups. “They make us laugh every day, like the way they interact and Bogey correcting Birdie,” says Colleen. “That’s what’s fun about having two dogs – they are funny.”
