Earl, EJ, and a Love That Lives On
Sweet Earl
Some pets don’t just pass through your life—they define a chapter of it. For the Poulson family, that kind of presence belonged to Earl.
Earl came into their lives in 2018 under bittersweet circumstances. His previous owner was entering hospice, and the family adopted him, giving him a new home just when he needed one. From the start, Earl stood out. A sleek Russian Blue with a silvery coat and striking, thoughtful eyes, he carried himself with a kind of quiet intensity, until, of course, he decided not to.
“He had a reputation,” Brigitte recalls with a laugh. “He’d try to fight all the dogs on the block and could jump six feet straight up. He was fearless.”
That fearlessness became the stuff of neighborhood legend. Earl wasn’t just a house cat; he was a presence. People knew him. Dogs definitely knew him. And despite his bold, almost reckless confidence, there was another side to him that made an even deeper impression.
“He’s the cat that made me love cats,” Brigitte says. “The sweetest thing in the world.”
Earl’s name came from something simple and familiar: the family’s love of tea, Earl Grey, naturally. It suited him. There was something refined about him, even when he was launching himself into midair or squaring off with a dog twice his size.
Though he shared his home with another cat, Rooibos (who had his own charm), Earl’s personality carved out a space entirely his own. Where Rooibos brought easygoing warmth, Earl brought intensity, elegance, and a surprising tenderness that revealed itself in quieter moments.
Earl passed away in April of 2023, but his absence didn't dull his presence in the family’s memory.
Not long after, the family adopted a kitten who looked uncannily like him. Earl Junior (EJ) arrived just a month later.
“The minute we saw her, we knew it was meant to be,” Brigitte says. “She could have been Earl’s twin.”
EJ may be her own cat with her own story unfolding, but she carries a visual echo of the one who came before; a reminder of a cat who didn’t just live in a home, but changed it.
Welcome to the family, EJ!
