From ZCHS to Rydell High: Holliday Farms Freshmen Take the Stage

The excitement is building at Zionsville Community High School as students get ready to bring the classic musical Grease to life on stage. We caught up with two Holliday Farms freshmen, Avery Benner and Riya Talwar, who are already making their mark in their very first high school production.

For Avery, landing the role of Rizzo was both thrilling and unexpected. “I love Broadway musicals, both the current ones and the classics,” she shared. “Grease is such a fun story set in the ’50s with catchy music and big dance numbers.” When the cast list was posted, she could hardly believe it. “I was sitting with my mom, refreshing Instagram over and over to see the list. When it finally came out, I started crying tears of joy. I was so grateful to be trusted with Rizzo as a freshman. The best part is that so many of my friends are in the cast too—it makes this first high school musical really special.”
Riya, who’s part of the ensemble, said auditioning for Grease had been a long-time dream. “I’ve always watched the amazing ZCHS musicals, and I was so excited that my first chance to be part of one was with Grease,” she said. “When I found out I made the cast, I was thrilled—and even better, so many of my friends are in it too.”
Both Avery and Riya say rehearsals have been a highlight of the experience. Avery especially loves how easy it’s been to connect with others. “I’ve made so many new friends, and everyone has been encouraging. The upperclassmen and directors are so helpful, and we even get to work with a professional vocal coach and choreographer. It feels like a team, and everyone wants you to do well.”
Riya added that the energy of rehearsals keeps her motivated. “The dances are so fun and upbeat. My favorite part in any musical is learning the choreography and then seeing it come together with the whole cast.”
Balancing schoolwork and rehearsals has been a challenge, but both students are finding their rhythm. “I try to squeeze in homework during breaks,” Avery admitted, laughing. “It’s definitely a lot, but it’s worth it.” Looking ahead, both are excited to perform in front of a live audience. “I can’t wait to hear the applause and see the reactions,” Riya said. Avery agreed: “Sharing all of this hard work with the community is going to be unforgettable.”
The girls also shared some favorite moments from the show. Riya is especially excited for the ballad Hopelessly Devoted to You, saying she can’t wait to watch Sandy “kill it on stage.” Avery loves the humor in Rizzo’s lines and the camaraderie of performing with the Pink Ladies. With those moments come challenges too—Avery admits stepping into the shoes of a “tough” character so unlike her real personality has pushed her as an actor, while Riya says the fast-paced choreography keeps her on her toes in the best way. Still, both girls agree the hard work is worth it. “The cast and crew are so talented, and the energy of this show is amazing,” Avery said. Riya added, “It’s music, choreography, and the most fun cast you could imagine—you won’t want to miss it.”
Summer may be over, but it’s about to feel like ‘Summer Nights’ at ZCHS—come cheer on Avery, Riya, and the whole cast of Grease this month!
