The Artful Journey of Amy DeNeal

For Zionsville resident Amy DeNeal, art has never been a choice—it has always been part of who she is. Today, she shares her lifelong passion with others through original pieces, commissions, and murals that reflect creativity and community.

Ask any artist when they became an artist, and Amy’s answer is the same as most: she always has been. Growing up in Brownsburg, she was lucky to have parents who nurtured her love of art. She spent her childhood painting, drawing, and taking every extra class she could. Those experiences shaped her path and proved to her that art was more than a pastime.

As a young couple, Amy and her husband Dustin chose Zionsville as the place to raise their family. Today, after nearly seven years, the town feels like home. Their boys, Lincoln and Declan, are in middle school, and their daughter Charlotte—who goes by Charlee—is enjoying her time at PVE. From cheer and dance to basketball and tennis, the DeNeal family stays active in the community. Even Dolly Jolene, their three-year-old mini Bernedoodle, adds to the fun and energy of their household.

A Leap of Faith
Before pursuing art as a career, Amy earned degrees in Health Sciences and Nursing from Purdue and Rush University and spent close to a decade in healthcare. While she loved her patients and coworkers, she became disillusioned with the system. With the support of Dustin and encouragement from friends and family, she turned her lifelong training as an artist into a business.

“It was a truly terrifying but ultimately life-changing switch,” Amy says. That leap has led to nearly nine years of creating art professionally. She started with small portrait commissions but has since expanded into murals, original pieces, and commissions that have been shipped across the country. A recent highlight was a fourteen-panel project for an apartment complex, proof of how far her art has grown.

Creative Offerings
Amy primarily works in acrylic and oil paints, often creating highly textured pieces influenced by expressionism and pointillism. Her themes frequently explore identity, nature, and hope—threads that tie back to both her past as a nurse and her transition to a new career.

Her services include:
  • Abstract and expressionist originals
  • Portraits and family sketches
  • Framed canvas and paper prints
  • Murals
  • Live event painting and sketches
  • Commissioned work tailored to client vision
Amy also hand-builds simple floating frames, offering clients a convenient option for displaying their art without the expense of custom framing.

Community at the Heart
Even as her art has expanded nationally, Amy has been “so blown away by the local support from others and their excitement to support a Zionsville-based artist.” She is always up for exploring new creative projects with community members. Just recently, she painted seven large megaphones for the ZHS senior cheerleaders and loved being able to work on a project filled with Eagle pride.
Amy has also enjoyed giving back by contributing her art to silent auctions, supporting local fundraisers, and helping sponsor local organizations like ZYFL. For her, these opportunities are a meaningful way to stay rooted in the place she and her family call home.

Looking Ahead
As her children grow, Amy continues to take on larger projects, including an upcoming mural. She is also developing a new original collection and expanding her framed print offerings. Her goal is to help families and businesses bring warmth and personality into their spaces.
“All in all, I’m just really thankful for this community and excited for what the future might bring,” she says.
