The Edwards Effect: Making a Brownstone a Home
Let yourselves inside the doors of this beautiful brownstone using the QR code. The 3D tour will open up views of the rooms and allow you to explore the rooms as if you were there. 3D Photography by Justin Kelley, Beholder's Eye 3D Virtual Tours
What makes your home unique?
The Brownstones offer a distinctive charm all their own. Ours sits directly across from Legacy Park—a beautiful city park that acts like an extension of our front yard. Each Brownstone features a private courtyard, and ours is truly a reflection of who we are. It’s filled with colorful plants and trees that provide year-round interest, creating a personal oasis that evolves with the seasons.

Which rooms did you decorate?
All of them!
All of them!
Did you do the decorating yourselves?
Yes, we did. Most of our furnishings came from Bulgari Furniture, where Ivet, the owner, helped us select pieces that fit our style. We also collaborated with Makari Designs, a local company that handcrafted several custom furniture pieces. Our fireplace surround and the wall in our bonus room feature stunning, hand-painted faux finishes by the talented Lena Tutuma.

What was your design inspiration?
Our inspiration came from our lives together and the places we’ve lived. Our style is eclectic and, at times, a little whimsical. Kathy loves color and wanted the home to feel like a box of crayons come to life! Over the years, we’ve collected art, sculpture, pottery, and unique furniture from every place we've called home—across the U.S. and around the world.

Local artists also played a big role. We found inspiration at events like “The Artist Next Door,” where Sherrill Hill created a custom stained glass piece to complement our Japanese woodblocks. At the Indie Craft Fair, we met Mark and Kristen of Makari Designs, who brought several of our ideas to life. And Artisphere? That’s where inspiration is around every corner on Main Street.
Do you have a favorite decorating store?
Etsy, hands down! It’s the best place to find one-of-a-kind pieces and support artisans. Our wet bar shelving came from Soil & Oak, and Jay was incredible in helping us design and install the shelves. We also worked with Tara from Modernality Home Decor—she has a great selection of fabrics and was a joy to collaborate with on our draperies.

Favorite room in the house—and why?
That’s a tough one! We love every room, but if we had to choose, it would be the bonus room. It overlooks Legacy Park and is filled with cozy spots to curl up with a good book. It’s colorful, inviting, and full of personal touches that reflect memories from our lives together.

Did you decorate all at once or over time?
Our home reflects 46 years together and a lifetime of travels and experiences. While the design came together quickly after we moved in—within a couple of weeks—it’s rooted in decades of collecting, curating, and living.

If you could do it all over again, would you change anything?
Not a thing.
Not a thing.
What advice would you give to someone looking to refresh their home?
Be bold and stay true to your own style. Don’t be afraid of color or mixing patterns. Start small—attend events like Artisphere to begin building an art collection that speaks to you. And most importantly, let your space reflect your story.
