Kate Justice, From HHS to West Point with Determination and Heart

Kate Justice, a senior at Hurricane High School, is building an impressive legacy both on and off the softball field, supported by her close-knit family, her parents, Adam and Michelle Justice, and her sisters Emma and Harper. Growing up in Hurricane, Kate has developed into one of the area’s standout student-athletes, combining talent, leadership, and determination as she prepares for the next chapter of her journey.

Softball has been a central part of Kate’s life for the past decade. “I started playing because my parents signed me up, and I just fell in love with it,” she said. That early introduction quickly turned into a passion that has shaped her high school experience and opened doors for her future. Kate will continue both her academic and athletic career at the United States Military Academy, where she will play softball at the next level.

Her time on the field has been filled with meaningful moments and accomplishments. Kate has earned First Team All-State honors twice, along with multiple First Team All-Conference, All-Kanawha Valley, and Tri-State recognitions. As a pitcher, she recently reached an incredible milestone of 600 career strikeouts. Still, for Kate, the memories go beyond the awards. “My favorite moments are just being on the field with my best friends,” she shared with Stroll Hurricane. “It’s been a blessing to play a sport I love with people who mean so much to me.”

Kate’s involvement extends beyond athletics. She is an active member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and Helping Paws, and she is also the founder and president of a Cancer Kids First chapter at HHS. Her leadership in these organizations reflects her desire to make a positive impact in her school and community.

What sets Kate apart is not just her talent, but her mindset. “I think my work ethic and leadership help me continue to grow,” she said. “I always want to get better and help those around me do the same.” That drive has helped her balance a demanding schedule filled with academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities.

Maintaining that balance takes intentional effort. “I make sure to take time for myself,” Kate explained. “Stepping away when things get overwhelming, whether it’s resting, rehabbing, or just spending time with friends, helps me stay focused and enjoy what I do.” She added, “The relationships I have built through softball mean everything to me,” she shared with Stroll Hurricane.

Kate also draws inspiration from her family, especially her grandmother, Lucille Avis. “She built a life from almost nothing and created opportunities for our family,” Kate said. “She motivates all of us to work hard, even when things are difficult.”

As she looks ahead to the future, Kate remains focused on growth, both as an athlete and as a person. With her dedication, leadership, and strong support system, she is well prepared to take on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, continuing to represent HHS and our community with pride.
