The HurricaneHIgh School Baseball team on their 5th State Championship

The Hurricane High School baseball team added another impressive chapter to its storied legacy this season, capturing the program’s fifth state championship and third since 2018. With titles in 2002, 2014, 2018, 2022, and now 2025, the Redskins have firmly established themselves as a powerhouse in West Virginia baseball.
The team closed out the regular season with a strong 29-7 record. Their postseason journey included a solid run through the Sectionals, where they defeated both Huntington and Parkersburg South. In the Regionals, Hurricane battled Spring Valley in a best-of-three series, clinching the Regional Championship with two hard-fought wins.
At the state tournament, Hurricane first topped Hedgesville before facing off against a tough Morgantown team in the title game. The Redskins emerged victorious, securing the 2025 state championship and once again bringing the trophy home to Hurricane.
Head Coach Brian Sutphin praised his team’s unity and the leadership of this year’s senior class, which included Weston Smith, Griffin Dempsey, Brady Rigney, Wesley Sutton, Wyatt Gautier, Nick Fleece, Bryson Shirkey, and Jonah Wilfong.
“This group had incredible chemistry and a true team-first attitude,” Coach Sutphin said. “We certainly weren’t the favorites when the season started, but their effort, resiliency, and willingness to put the team above themselves made it a very special year for everyone involved.”
Weston Smith was among the standout performers, earning both Gatorade Player of the Year and AP Player of the Year honors. Smith finished the season with an undefeated 11-0 record on the mound, anchoring the pitching staff and leading with poise.
Coach Sutphin also reflected on a meaningful moment that stood out during the season. “Being able to honor those that we lost over the last few years before the start of the season—Will Washburn, Adele Groom, and Cam Carney—was truly a highlight during our season and an inspiration for the team all year,” Coach Sutphin shared withStroll Hurricane.
