Springtime in the South!
What a wonderful time of year! It seems that everyone just loves Spring because it
brings longer days before sunset, warm sunshine, some spring rains, and that equals lots of beautiful blooms!
Garden spaces are enticing, so getting yours ready and prepared so that you can
entertain and enjoy these outdoor garden spaces that are wonderful extensions of your home.
This is the best time of year for adding soil amendments, trimming, pruning, and
fertilizing every plant in your garden and defining the bed lines. These simple strategies
will reward you with optimum color, texture and form. Always include adding
intoxicating fragrances from shrubs like Fragrant Tea Olives, Gardenias, Jasmine,
Viburnum.
Some of my favorite ornamental trees that offer profuse blooms are Redbuds, Yoshino
or Kwanzan Cherries, Dogwoods, and Magnolias. The ‘Jane’ or ‘Royal Star ‘saucer
Magnolias take the show with their outstanding color. A combination of both deciduous
and evergreen trees will offer strategically placed privacy as well as structure and form.
As a professional Landscape Designer, I feel it’s always best to begin the design
consultation process that provides a Scaled Landscape Design that is accompanied by
a Plant Key. Your garden design should include some of your personal favorites so that
your garden is created with you and your family in mind for the most custom and
curated gardens.
When contemplating your design, consider the planning to include hardscapes of all
types, whether to include a swimming pool, outdoor kitchen, conversation patio, firepit,
fireplace, kids' play areas, or water features. These garden rooms are the wonderful
spaces that literally connect to the home’s interior and extend your outdoor living
spaces for year-round entertainment. The lifestyle of each member of the family, including
pets, is a huge part of the design elements to be considered.
It’s so important to consider the home’s architecture, the interior design, along with each
room view, as well as window and door layout, to create optimum flow and connectivity
of the garden rooms. For instance, placement of an oversized Water Fountain, Statuary
or Planter/Urn with Thrillers, Fillers, and Spillers for eye-catching appeal from several
viewpoints can be a Focal Point that can be enjoyed year-round.
Happy Spring to you all!
