Scarlett O'Hara Bondy
Precious Pets on the Porches of I'On
HELLO FROM SCARLETT BONDY
Greetings from me, “Chadwick Money or Love”; “Scarlett” to my friends. I’m feeling
super at -home here in I’On, since we’re in “Charlestown’s” backyard. My granddad
“Verheyen Dustin” came from England to court and mate with my grandma “Chadwick
Embrace” in Connecticut, so I inherited a love of all things English. Did you know that
my ancestors warmed the laps of 17 th c English royalty? King Charles II spent hours
playing with his Cavalier King Charles Spaniels when he should have been taking care
of business!
I’On has that British vibe… my daily walks show me precious pampered pups: lots of
Anglophile Corgi’s, Springer Spaniels, Pointers, Jack Russels, Beagles, Fox Hounds
and more! Can’t resist jumping on the folks at the end of their leashes, I need to be
noticed! Mom told dad I’d never learn “sit and wait” since I’m “ADD”. What’s ADD??
Adorable Ditsy Darling??
Yup, we’re in Charlestown’s back yard, with stone and stucco castle – houses, big
gardens chock full of lizards, and folks making friends through their doggos. One of my
biggest admirers is” Tristan” a dashing Welsh – English Corgi. We hang out in the
garden and in cold weather lie on sunny hot pebbles in the driveway. I sometimes play
“hard to get” to try to keep him coming back.
My best girlfriend is the very stylish pure white Sealyham terrier called “Poppy”. Did you
know Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart and Alfred Hitchcock owned and promoted
Sealyhams?? Not to mention Liz Taylor and Bette Davis, proud owners. Guess we’re 2
of a kind… Poppy’s from Hollywood Royalty and I’m from the King Charles line!
Before I forget, you need to know how I ended up in Dixie. Mom and dad have always
been just as obsessed with my type. One Connecticut Saturday morning long ago Dad
was running errands, spied a gaggle of “Cavies” in front of the Methodist church, and
jumped out of the car to make sure it was real. Indeed, they were practicing before their
“Fun Match” competition down in the Church basement. Our bedroom phone rang,
waking mom up from dreams (or nightmares!) of a long weekly commute to NYC. Dad’s
news: he’d just met a very nice Scottish lady who seemed to be managing this curious
event and just happened to be expecting a litter. This was the beginning of a four-
decade long relationship with a wonderful breeder, and I’m the 4 th in her Chadwick line
to live with the Bondys.
Fast forward to the land of Palmetto Bugs and the occasional skittering Black Racer
Snake (which I’ve yet to catch), and it’s… “Welcome to Charleston”! I hear they arrived
with 2 Cavs: Nayla, a sweet Rescue with short ears / long nose (Definitely NOT Cavalier
standard) who crossed the Rainbow Bridge years before I appeared on the scene. My
bro “Sherman” (another Chadwick) was left sad and solo; my folks mourned for a
second dog. “2 Cavaliers are better than one”, mom called Connecticut and drove 800
miles to choose Sherman’s new (read THEIR) companion…me!
Picture a giant sloping meadow filled with scads of Cavaliers (at LEAST 14) of all ages.
I’m one of 7 puppies, mysteriously the only one left for sale. Must admit I was the
“Runt” ... BUT resolved to punch far above my weight. I jumped up on a chair next to my
World Champion British dad for a photo, and google – eyed, this new lady I hoped
would be mommy … how could she resist? With leash, collar, fleece bed, my fave toys
and a kiss goodbye I was packed up in mom’s car for the trek to Mt. Pleasant… My
new life!
Bet you can guess what I’ll be for Halloween … a Queen Charles Spaniel! I have no
other choice!
