From Jewels to Bocce
Marsha Levy's Artistic Journey and Newfound Passions in Ibis
Marsha Levey-Blandy moved to Ibis from Ballenisles, specifically Egret Meadow Lane, just a year ago, and she often says she hit the neighbor lottery coming here. The Ibis community has proven to be incredibly welcoming, making her feel right at home.
Her journey into the world of jewelry began in the bustling streets of New York City. Growing up, she spent countless hours on 47th Street with her mother and grandmother, absorbing the intricate details of fine jewelry.
After a 30 year career in the world of head hunting and law firm staffing, Marsha sold her Washington DC company and was ready for her next chapter. She discovered the world of metalsmithing, which led to 15 years of dedicated study and creation as a goldsmith, metalsmith, and jewelry designer. Marsha also enjoys doing her own lapidary work, crafting many of the stones she uses in her pieces. Ten years ago, she joined the Gem and Mineral Society of the Palm Beaches and currently uses their shop to carve, and cab stones, as well as her own designated shop at home.
Marsha's current work involves 22-karat gold, Argentium, and fine silver, often adorned with faceted gemstones and cabochons. She finds endless inspiration in the stones themselves, particularly the blues and greens reminiscent of a moving sea. The shapes and colors of the stones guide her designs, allowing her creativity to flourish as she combines different elements, and shapes she creates to result in harmonious pieces.
Since moving to Ibis, Marsha has developed a newfound passion: Bocce Ball. The game has become a delightful diversion, pulling her away from her workshop from 8:30 or 9:00 in the morning until noon. The challenge of mastering the game and the camaraderie of her fellow players have made Bocce Ball a cherished part of her daily routine.
Marsha has studied under numerous national master jewelers. The ones that have most inspired her work are Susan and Jeff Wise, Michael Boyd, So Young Park, Sam Woehrmann, Jenny Reeves, and John Cogswell. Many of these artists have stayed with her and worked in her home studio while they were in town for workshops with The Florida Society of Goldsmiths, an organization she has been deeply involved with for many years. She served as President of the South East Chapter for six out of the last eight years before resigning in January.
Through her involvement with The Florida Society of Goldsmiths, Marsha has gained an intense education, attending around 40 days of instruction each year for the past 15 years. Now, she occasionally teaches workshops for the society, including at The Art Armory and The Lighthouse.
Marsha's work is showcased at The Shaw Jewelry Gallery in Maine, a collection of contemporary jewelry artists', where she currently has 30 pieces on display. She also exhibits her work at The Palm Beach Convention Center during The Fine Craft Show. She has been included at Bijoux Contemporary at the Boca Raton Museum in the last few years. That show is a collection of 40 invited artists from around the world. From time to time, she will also exhibit pieces at the Faculty Show at The Lighthouse. Since each of her pieces is unique and not cast for duplication, her creations are true labors of love, completed one piece at a time. Each piece she creates begins with flat sheets of gold or silver and then she manipulates each form to create the desired shape, size, body to fit her design. Her stone setting, also her work product; each stone carefully set by her hand.
