The 70-Pound Lap Dogs Boomer and Captain

In our house personal space is a thing of the past and a 70-pound dog is always within arm’s reach. Meet Captain and Boomer.

Boomer

They are two Doodles who are identical in size but worlds apart in wisdom. To most they look like a matching set of fluffy bookends, but in reality they are more like two fluffy tornadoes.

The Steady Captain

At five years old Captain, our brown Labradoodle, is the seasoned pro of the duo. He recently started managing Addison’s Disease and he has handled the transition like a champ. The best sign that he was feeling like his old self again was when the snuggles returned and he was ready to hit the dirt.

Captain is my dedicated trail running partner. He is our resilient anchor who handles the miles with ease, but he still has his silly streaks. If the garden hose comes out after a run, he is the first one there trying to eat the water as it sprays. He is living proof that a little health routine does not slow down a dog with a mission to explore.

Boomer: The 70-Pound Toddler

Then there is Boomer. While he stands eye-to-eye with Captain, our almost 2-year-old black and white Bernedoodle is still very much in his puppy phase. Boomer lives life at one speed: enthusiastic. He has not quite grasped the physics of his own size yet. He tends to navigate the house with the coordination of a bouncy castle in a windstorm. He is Captain’s shadow, his playmate, and the self-appointed chaos coordinator of the family.

The Coffee Routine

These two are water dogs by design. If there is a lake or a river nearby, the fluffy tornadoes are going in. But when the outdoor adventure is over, they are professional couch staples. Despite their size, they both firmly believe they are lap dogs and will always find a way to squeeze in for a nap.

Their absolute favorite part of the day is the morning drive. Boomer has actually learned the word coffee. The moment he hears it, he waits by the door for Mom to get ready. He knows the exact route that leads to Dutch Bros. While Mom gets her caffeine fix, the boys are there for the Pupcups. The crew knows them by name and it is officially the highlight of Boomer’s morning.

Better Together

Through trail runs, morning coffee stops, and quiet afternoons on the sofa, Captain and Boomer keep us on our toes. They are a constant reminder that life is best lived with a loyal brother by your side and a cozy place to land at the end of the day.
