A Coast-to-Coast Dream Fulfilled
How a father and son turned a decade-old promise into the motorcycle trip of a lifetime.

When Louis Schlaudt’s son, Randall, graduated from Texas A&M in 2013, he dreamed of riding his motorcycle to California—just him, the open road, and the wild unknown. Concerned about him going solo, Louis offered to join, sparking a father–son tradition of road trips. They never made it to California that first time, but explored Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Texas, Colorado, and New Mexico—always keeping the West Coast on their list.
In September 2024, more than a decade later, they finally made it. Louis trailered both motorcycles from College Station to San Diego, where Randall met him. From there, they rode north to the Oregon border, then returned south along the Pacific Coast Highway, camping in parks and staying in hotels. They discovered unexpected gems like 572 Social Kitchen & Lounge in Big Bear Lake, where live music set the tone.
Their itinerary blended nature and history—redwoods, giant sequoias, a steam train ride through the forest, the Winchester House, Hearst Castle, and the Petersen Automotive Museum. Randall especially loved the Pacific Coast Highway’s winding cliffs, sparkling water, and endless sky.
The highlight? A perfect-weather hike in Kings Canyon National Park, where waterfalls and mountain vistas looked “like postcards come to life.”
On the road, fellow travelers were drawn to their story—a father and son on motorcycles is a rare, heartwarming sight.
Next up, Louis and his wife, Laurie, plan a California road trip—no motorcycles this time—while he and Randall are already mapping their next adventure. His advice: “Plan ahead. Make those camping reservations. It frees you up to enjoy the moment.”
