Meet Rainy, Sage & Willow: A Trio with Heart (and Paws) for Days

Carlos and Heidi Cruz may be newer to the neighborhood—having moved in April 2025—but their home is already full of personality, loyalty, and wagging tails. What they love most so far? The neighborhood trails, which have quickly become a favorite destination for both the family and their dogs.
The Cruz household is proudly a three-dog family, something they never expected—but now can’t imagine living without.
Rainy is the elder stateswoman of the pack. A 17-year-old blue merle female Pomeranian, Rainy perfectly embodies her breed: sassy, loyal, and full of character. Named during the family’s years in the Pacific Northwest, her cloudy coat mirrored the region’s famously gray skies. These days, Rainy has perfected the art of napping, though in her younger years she was known for stealing socks and demanding games of tug or fetch. She still enjoys tagging along for bike rides and soaking up the Texas sunshine after the family’s move from the Seattle area.
Sage (black and white, age six) and Willow (black merle, age three) are something truly special. They’re coltrievers—a purposeful mix of Border Collie and Golden Retriever developed through a partnership with the University of Washington. The goal of the program was to study whether combining the Golden Retriever’s human-focused temperament with the Border Collie’s work ethic could create an exceptional service and support dog. The result? A resounding yes. Coltrievers have gone on to help non-verbal children find their voices, comfort veterans, support individuals with PTSD or grief, and even serve as seizure alert dogs.
Sage came into the family first, after the Cruzes’ youngest child volunteered at the farm where the coltrievers were developed. One puppy formed an instant bond—and insisted on coming home. That puppy was Sage. After falling in love with the breed, the family later welcomed Willow. Their names were chosen thoughtfully: sage and willow are both plants known for their healing properties, a perfect nod to the breed’s purpose.
Despite their different ages and backgrounds, all three dogs share one standout trait: they love everyone. Friendly, happy, and eager to greet new faces, they bring joy wherever they go.
Sage and Willow are incredibly smart and thrive on learning. One of the family’s favorite games is hide-and-seek—having the dogs sit and stay in one room while the humans hide, then calling them to come find everyone. They never disappoint. As for toys, Sage is devoted to a stuffed pig, Willow cherishes a stuffed lion, and both agree that balls are the ultimate prize. When it comes to treats, freeze-dried beef liver is the clear winner for all three.
Some of the Cruzes’ most meaningful memories aren’t tied to one single moment, but to how their dogs bring the family together. Walks on the trails often turn into family outings, and training sessions have become shared experiences that reinforce communication, consistency, and teamwork.
In the neighborhood, Rainy prefers the comfort of home and a good nap, while Sage and Willow are happiest out on the trails. Though they haven’t explored many parks beyond the neighborhood yet, the trails have more than satisfied their adventurous spirits. All three dogs have embraced the Texas climate after their move from the Pacific Northwest.
If they could choose their next adventure? As long as their people are with them, they’re in. Hikes are a favorite, Sage loves playing in the water, and kayaking is on the agenda for Sage and Willow this summer. Rainy, ever the dignified traveler, would happily opt for another bike ride—preferably somewhere scenic and smooth.
With Rainy, Sage, and Willow, the Cruz family has found not just pets, but companions who heal, unite, and make every walk a little more meaningful.
