29 Rose Avenue

A Coastal Classic with a Modern Twist

For more than a decade, Alan and Kimberly Nowell have called Isle of Hope home, embracing the island’s natural beauty and strong sense of community. Their home at 29 Rose Avenue, which they built in collaboration with local builder Josh Waters, is a reflection of their love for coastal living—blending classic Lowcountry charm with modern design elements.

One of the home’s most cherished features is its welcoming porches, where the family spends countless hours enjoying the outdoors. “We love our porches and spend a lot of time on them,” Kimberly says. Creating the perfect layout, however, came with its challenges. Given the constraints of a small lot, the Nowells worked closely with their architect to refine their plans, ensuring the home maximized both space and functionality.

Over the years, they’ve made thoughtful updates, such as adding columns to the front porch and refreshing the interior with new paint colors. Their home has also been a gathering place for many memorable events, from hosting the Tour of Homes to football parties and celebrations surrounding the Isle of Hope Art and Music Festival.

Looking ahead, the Nowells envision an outdoor fireplace and an open-air porch to further enhance their space. Until then, they offer simple advice for fellow homeowners: “Plant deer-resistant plants.”

As for inspiration, Kimberly highlights a newly renovated house on the Bluff that has carefully preserved its architectural integrity. “Watching the renovation was really cool,” she says. “The attention to detail was incredible.”

With its blend of timeless design, modern updates, and a deep connection to the neighborhood, the Nowell home continues to be a special part of Isle of Hope’s landscape.
