The Canady Backyard
Designed for Family, Friends, and Football
For more than three decades, Ronald and Margie Canady have watched Isle of Hope grow and change around them. After 32 years in the neighborhood, what they value most hasn’t shifted: familiar faces, a steady rhythm of daily life, and a setting that made raising their three children—and now welcoming grandchildren—feel rooted and easy.
Their backyard reflects that same sense of intention. Designed first and foremost for hosting, the space was created to bring people together. Sundays often mean lunch for 15 to 20 family members, while Wednesday evenings welcome a church group of similar size. On fall Saturdays, the yard becomes a hub for college football, and on quieter mornings, it offers a peaceful place for coffee—or the occasional nap.
The centerpiece is a covered pavilion with a fireplace, built five years ago and now the heart of every gathering. Nearby, an artificial turf lawn gives grandchildren room to play while adults settle in under the pavilion. A refurbished fire pit area, complete with a smokeless fire pit, invites lingering conversations and s’mores after dark. More recently, the Canadys updated their brick paver patio and refreshed the surrounding landscaping, giving the space a polished yet comfortable feel.
One feature carries special meaning: a concrete slab etched with their children’s names, originally poured years ago as a backyard basketball court. Today, it anchors the fire pit area—a reminder that while seasons change, family memories continue to layer themselves into the landscape.
Looking ahead, the Canadys already have plans in mind. When the grandchildren outgrow the play set, a putting green may take its place—proof that this yard will keep evolving, just as it always has.
