8 Colonel Estill Avenue

A Home Shaped by Time, Neighbors, and the Outdoors

For nearly three decades, Bryan and Jennifer Hale have made Isle of Hope their anchor, drawn to its walkable charm, familiar faces, and the quiet beauty of backing up to historic Wormsloe. Nineteen years ago, they settled into 8 Colonel Estill Avenue, becoming only the second owners of the cozy ranch cottage. One of their closest neighbors grew up in the home, adding an unexpected thread of continuity that has shaped their experience from the day they moved in.

The Hales describe their home as warm and unpretentious, with a relaxed cottage feel and an emphasis on outdoor living. Front and back porches frame the house, while the backyard leans into a tropical aesthetic—an escape they’ve cultivated with the same care they give their interior spaces. “We spend a lot of time outside,” Jennifer said, noting that the outdoors is treated as an extension of the home.

Owning an older house means there is always a new project underway, but the couple embraces the rhythm of continual improvements. One of their favorite undertakings was transforming the back cottage into a welcoming guesthouse during the pandemic, thanks to the helping hands of a longtime friend.

Their home has also played host to countless celebrations—baby and bridal showers, milestone birthdays, engagement parties, and even a wedding rehearsal dinner—moments that have layered memories into every corner of the property.

With more projects already queued up, the Hales’ guiding philosophy remains simple: Make your home a place you love to look at—inside and out. Jennifer, who owns Lulu + Coco Custom Interiors, says the island is filled with homes worthy of admiration and inspiration, each with its own story and steady evolution.
