Isle of Hope Historical Association
Preserving the Past, Protecting the Future
As the nation approaches its 250th birthday, the story of Isle of Hope continues to unfold—carefully stewarded by the Isle of Hope Historical Association (IOHHA). Founded in 1977 by residents committed to safeguarding the island’s legacy, the association has spent nearly five decades ensuring that Isle of Hope’s history is not only remembered but actively protected.
At the heart of IOHHA’s mission is preservation with purpose. Through its website, member communications, and The 1736 Gazette newsletter, the association documents the island’s past using vintage photographs, rare maps, memoirs, and recorded stories. Just as important, IOHHA brings history to life through events that strengthen community ties while honoring the island’s character. The association also works to preserve Isle of Hope’s historic character by protecting the Bluff area from the real threat of development.
IOHHA presents several events throughout the year that positively impact the community. Residents gather in Paxton Park for the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting, complete with caroling and Santa’s arrival on the Bluff. Additional events have included live music afternoons, food trucks, and a festive golf cart decorating contest. In partnership with the Savannah Tree Foundation, IOHHA has also helped replenish the Bluff’s tree canopy by planting live oaks—an investment in both beauty and longevity. For upper-level members, the annual 1736 Reception offers an evening of dinner, music, and celebration beneath the stars.
Members of IOHHA live across the country, united by a shared connection to Isle of Hope and a desire to preserve what makes the community unique. To learn more, explore collections, or become a member, visit iohha.org.
