White Heron Cottage

Artistic Charm on Smith Drive

Tucked beneath the oaks at 8 Smith Drive, the White Heron Cottage is more than just a home—it’s a canvas for creativity and a tribute to timeless style. Isle of Hope resident Bellamy Jaubert Murphy has called the neighborhood home for over 23 years, drawn to its quiet beauty, natural surroundings, and welcoming spirit.

She purchased the cottage three years ago and spent six months breathing new life into the historic structure. Local lore suggests part of the home may have once been a relocated slave cottage, adding layers of complex history to its foundation. Restoration included a new roof, updated kitchen and bathrooms, and an entirely new approach to flooring—after uncovering plywood, glue, and nearly a million nails, Murphy opted for pine floors painted and glazed in white to create a fresh, open feel.

Inside, the home blends vintage finds, antiques, and Murphy’s own original artwork. Handcrafted light fixtures, painted bathroom walls, antique vanities, and repurposed doors all contribute to its one-of-a-kind charm. “It’s just a classic cottage,” she said, “with a lot of personal touches.”

White Heron Cottage also serves as a creative gathering space. From dinner parties to art pop-ups, it doubles as a gallery for her work—welcoming neighbors for refreshments, conversation, and inspiration.

Murphy offers simple advice for others looking to enhance their homes: “Have fun with it. Put in elements that you love—but try to keep it simple and classic. It will never go out of style.”
