Balancing Academics, Athletics, and a Passion for Competition

Nicholas Nowell, an eighth-grader at Hancock Day School, has lived on Isle of Hope for a decade, appreciating the community’s kindness and access to the water—ideal for his love of fishing. At just 13, Nicholas is already a dedicated multi-sport athlete, playing football, basketball, and baseball, along with competing on the Forest City Gun Club Juniors shooting team.

Nicholas’s passion for sports began at the age of five. Since then, he’s embraced the thrill of competition and the payoff that comes with hard work. He plays as a tight end in football, a center in basketball, and a pitcher in baseball—his versatility and skill evident across all these roles. Recently, he achieved a major milestone by finishing second in the nation for his age group at the SCTP national shooting championship, a proud moment that highlights his talent and dedication. Additionally, he was chosen as the starting pitcher for an all-star baseball game—an honor that reinforced his love for the game.

Balancing schoolwork and sports isn’t always easy, especially with a heavy homework load, but Nicholas has learned to make time for his studies during free moments at school or as soon as he gets home. His drive is fueled by the life lesson he values most: “The harder you work, the more it pays off.” Inspired by his sports idol, Brock Bowers, and encouraged by his dad—who coached him in his early years—Nicholas is focused on improving and hopes to continue his athletic journey in high school and perhaps even college.

Above all, Nicholas believes that sports should bring joy, reminding young athletes to keep their passion alive as they pursue their dreams.
