Meet Captain Rusty Batey

Charting a Course for Community and Conservation

Rusty Batey has spent a lifetime riding the tide between innovation and island living. Originally from Charleston, South Carolina, his early years unfolded along the creeks and coastlines of Hilton Head, Daufuskie Island, and Savannah. That lifelong connection to the water ultimately shaped both his personal path and professional mission.

After graduating from high school in Savannah and earning a marketing degree from the College of Charleston, Rusty launched his first tech business in the mid-1990s. He grew the company from the ground up, eventually selling it to Hargray Communications. Today, he leads Zulu Marine Services—a multi-division marine contracting firm specializing in shoreline stabilization, dredging, and waterway debris removal across the Southeast. With a focus on nature-based solutions and environmental stewardship, Zulu Marine blends heavy marine equipment with innovative techniques to protect and restore vulnerable coastlines.

Though recently divorced, Rusty finds joy in his role as stepfather to four: Lauren, Dalton, Clayton, and Cadence, ages 11 to 35. Each brings their own spark—Dalton is a musician and designer; Clayton shares his love of the outdoors and works for Zulu Marine; Lauren has a heart for helping others; and Cadence is a thoughtful student and violinist living in Tennessee. Rusty is also a proud grandfather to Rowan and Aspyn.

His household includes two golden retrievers, Colby and Cassie, and three rescue cats—Boots, Smokey, and KitCat—who enjoy golf cart rides along Bluff Drive just as much as their human does.

Outside of work, Rusty is rarely still. He’s captained the same men’s league soccer team for more than 30 years and once coached a youth team through a two-week European tour. That love for the game has morphed into a multigenerational community where friendships span decades.

A seasoned boater, Rusty frequently explores the Bahamas and the Keys, with future plans to charter the Greek Isles or sail his own boat to Cuba. Back home, he favors easy afternoons at the marina, dining at Driftaway Café or Castaways, and walking the neighborhood with his dogs.

Whether he's stabilizing shorelines or building relationships, Rusty remains anchored in purpose, curiosity, and a deep respect for coastal living.
