Marigold

A Spirited Cairn Terrier With a Historic Legacy

When Mariana Thomas brought Marigold home from a breeder in central Florida, it was more than just adding a new pet to the family—it was the happy ending to a difficult chapter. After a challenging year of health struggles, she made a promise to herself: If she made it through, she would welcome another Cairn terrier into her life. That promise led her to Marigold, a lively and affectionate companion who has since become an integral part of her world.

At just over two years old, Marigold is a purebred Cairn terrier, a breed with deep Scottish roots dating back to the 1600s. Though once popular—especially after Toto’s appearance in The Wizard of Oz—Cairn terriers are now at risk of extinction. Known for their intelligence, loyalty, and sturdy build, they were originally bred to rid Scottish cairns of vermin. Marigold embodies these traits while adding her own joyful spirit to the mix.

From the moment she arrived, Marigold made her presence known. She quickly won over Mariana’s older dog, Nugget, bringing him happiness in his final year. These days, she’s a social butterfly, always eager to meet new people. Her favorite activities include neighborhood walks, romping with her best friend Edna, and tagging along on shopping trips—especially when a drive-thru treat is involved.

Marigold’s name came to Mariana on a whim, inspired by Downton Abbey, only to later discover a surprising coincidence—her pup’s paternal grandmother shared the same name. Most recently, Marigold became a mother herself, delivering four healthy puppies in February. With her charm, history, and heartwarming story, this little terrier is more than just a pet—she’s a legacy in the making.
