Tug, Whaler, and Nauti

Three Pawsome Shipmates of Isle of Hope

For a little over a year, Isle of Hope resident Brandy Okones has shared her quiet, picturesque corner of the neighborhood with three unforgettable canine crewmates: Tug, Whaler, and Nauti. All rescues, they’ve each earned their nautical titles and a place in her heart.

Tug, the “salty captain,” is a 12-year-old veteran adopted from One Love Animal Rescue. Returned twice before finding Brandy, he’s now firmly at the helm — and true to his name, he still pulls on the leash like a tugboat under full steam.

First mate Whaler, a 6-year-old Great Dane-Lab mix, joined the crew during the pandemic. Velcroed to Brandy’s side and quick to point like a bird dog, he’s proof that some sailors are happiest when docked with their favorite person.

Nauti, the deckhand, is a black Lab with all the classic traits — goofy, food-driven, and relentlessly ball-obsessed. Rescued through One Love’s Florida Lab Rescue partnership, he’s known to bark at the office supply closet until someone hands over a tennis ball.

While their leash manners may suggest otherwise, these three have plenty of friends — especially at The Hipster Hound, their go-to spot for treats, parties, and playtime. Tug even celebrated his 12th birthday there.

Next summer, the crew will sail (figuratively) to Iowa to explore Brandy’s family farm — 40 acres and a pond where Whaler and Nauti will experience off-leash freedom for the first time. Until then, they’ll keep making waves locally, proving that life is better with a loyal crew on deck.
