For Wyatt Rockwell Tyler, there is rarely an offseason.

The rising fifth grader at Saint James Catholic School turns 11 in September and fills his calendar with basketball, baseball, swimming, and flag football. This fall brings something new: tackle football for Saint James, a challenge Wyatt is eager to take on.

Wyatt moved to Isle of Hope from nearby Sandfly when he was 5. He appreciates the neighborhood for the same reason many young athletes might — there is almost always someone outside ready to ride bikes, fish, or swim.

Swimming has become a particular source of accomplishment. Wyatt joined the Isle of Hope Sharks at age 5 and recently completed his first year of year-round club swimming with LCAC. This summer, he placed first in his age group at the Savannah Coastal Swim City Meet Championship while the Sharks captured their fourth consecutive overall title. He also qualified for the state championship during his first year of club swimming.

His progress has been shaped by coaches who emphasize more than results. Baseball coach Trey Myers taught Wyatt to turn moments on the field into lessons about character, while Coach Ella with the Sharks and Coach Dennis with LCAC have helped build his confidence in the water.

Managing two sports each season alongside school requires discipline. Wyatt uses spare time during the school day to tackle assignments, allowing him to arrive at practice ready to concentrate.

Across every sport, he has discovered that effort matters, but so does how athletes treat one another. His advice to other young competitors reflects that perspective: Be a team player, be kind, encourage teammates when they are struggling, and listen to the coaches guiding you.

For Wyatt, the wins are exciting. The friendships, teamwork, and lessons that come with them are even better.
