Salty Oyster Curated Gifts

Two Friends, Two Styles, and a Coastal Point of View

For Dutch Island residents Ali Benson and Marti Cribbs, the shoreline is more than scenery. It is a source of raw materials, possibility, and the occasional oyster shell too striking to leave behind.

Both women have called the Lowcountry home for over 20 years. Their friendship was forged through the Dutch Island community and a mutual appreciation for Savannah’s waterways. Both also grew up sewing and making things by hand, guided by patient mentors. Marti learned from her mother and grandmother, while an elderly neighbor taught Ali.

Years later, once their children were grown, boat outings and walks along the Georgia coast gave the women more time to gather shells, driftwood, bottles, and other storm-tossed finds. What began as an exercise in reimagining those objects eventually became Salty Oyster Curated Gifts.

Their contrasting sensibilities give the collection its range. Marti favors a polished, tailored look, showcased in her hand-decorated oyster shell napkin rings and intricately assembled oyster crosses. Ali gravitates toward organic compositions, using natural elements to transform bottles, driftwood, and candles into décor rich in color and texture.

Their inventory extends well beyond coastal pieces. The pair also knits baby blankets; embroiders bibs, wreath scarves, and tea towels; and assembles customized gift baskets for weddings, new babies, birthdays, housewarmings, hostess occasions, corporate accounts, and “just because” surprises.

Each basket is tailored to the recipient, occasion, and budget, with a handmade element tucked inside. For Ali and Marti, that detail matters. Their aim is not simply to package a present, but to assemble a one-of-a-kind treasure.
