10 Organizing Hacks and Systems that Transform Your Home According to a Certified Professional Organizer
Organizing is always one of the top three new year goals for families. However, keeping your home tidy and organized can feel like a never-ending challenge with busy schedules and active kiddos. A few clever hacks and routines can make all the difference. Here are 10 organizing tips to transform your home from chaotic to calm.
1. Set a timer. Timers help us spring into action! No matter what the tidying task is, you can get it done in a short amount of time by setting a timer for 10 minutes.
2. Reset your space weekly. Things get out of hand all week. Reclaim your home with a 30 minute weekly reset every Sunday evening to get everything back to where it belongs. You start the week ready for anything.
3. Huddle up. Gather your family for a family meeting once a week. Review calendars, check on upcoming events and vacations, and communicate about your week. End your meeting with food and fun.
4. Create a Command Center. Paper and mail come in faster than we can handle. Everyone wants to know what is for dinner. Who needs to know what meetings are this week? Set up a Command Center for incoming papers with a calendar and meal plan board. You can use dry erase calendars for dates, a bulletin board for invitations and photos and wall pockets to sort papers. Your family can keep on top of schedules, and you can keep on top of paper work.
5. Host a “laundry party” to get laundry put away. Gather everyone in your family, turn up the playlist, and get all the laundry hung up and in drawers. Working together everyone is accountable for their own space but empowered by the team effort.
6. Make meal prep 1 -2 -3. First set up a meal rotation of family favorites. Second order groceries to be delivered. Third prep your fruit, veggies and meals so they are ready to go all week long. Having a system makes it easy to serve healthy food all week long.
7. Follow the “one in, two out” rule. Stuff accumulates faster than ever. When you purchase something new, let go of two items to clear out and create extra space. You can feel the difference when there is less in your home.
8. Go with the energy flow. You know when you are ready to let go of something when you are not feeling the energy of it, whether that is clothes, appliances or anything in your home. The item feels heavy or takes away your energy when you wear it or use it. Go with the flow and drop that item into a donation bag to donate it to a local philanthropy.
9. Make it a date! Set a date on your calendar for regular decluttering. With busy schedules, decluttering and organizing falls to the bottom of your list. Set a date before kiddos birthdays, holidays or during the summer when there is a little more time.
10. Love labels. Grab a label maker for your pantry, kids’ dressers, or your utility room. When you label these common spaces, everyone in your home knows where things go and organization stays maintained. No more explaining where to put the groceries.
None of these hacks take more than 30 minutes to do, but what a difference these will make in your home. Choose one routine to start this new year to bring calm into your space. This year make your new year organizing goal a reality all year long with these simple and quick strategies.
