Art That Soothes the Soul

Meet Nancy Ghigna

What has your artistic journey been like?
I've been drawing since I was a young child and my parents were very encouraging helping me develop my talent. I attended Rhode Island School of Design every Saturday from 5th grade through high school and it opened my eyes to many mediums and subjects I hadn't explored in public school. My bachelor's degree was in art history and I had the opportunity to study in Rome, Italy  my junior year of college. I did many museum internships during and after college to include the Smithsonian Institution in D.C.

What are your favorite mediums to work with?
High quality street chalk, pencil, ink pens, charcoal/conte crayons, pastels and watercolors.

What's your most memorable artistic project?
As a kid, I did etching on whalebone (scrimshaw) and I loved it. For obvious reasons the medium isn't available any longer. It's an old New England art form and the etching pieces were for earrings, necklaces and rings.

Are there any artists or movements that inspire your work?
I am fascinated by color, figure drawings, and draftsmanship. The Post Impressionist movement and artists; Toulouse Lautrec, Gauguin, Van Gogh, and Pop artist David Hockney are my favorites.

What impact do you hope your work has on others?
I do many animal portraits and it is rewarding especially when I'm asked to draw a pet that has passed. When I capture their unique expression and see how much it means to someone, that is a great feeling. I retired as Director of Victim Assistance for the Montgomery County D.A.'s Office (20 yrs.) in 2013 and I worked with all ages of crime victims. My office always had an easel, drawing pens, pencils, paper and of course crayons. Working with children in a stressful environment, I found art really did soothe their souls and mine.
