“They are both very loving and follow me everywhere,” says Gidget Sauceda of her two pups, Gigi and Chloe. “They are always on my lap, and I love that.” Gigi, a 14-year-old Havanese, was a Mother’s Day gift from Gidget’s children and husband; when Gidget first met Gigi, the tiny pup fit in the palm of her hand. Chloe, a 3-year-old Maltipoo, was abandoned and tied to a fence behind some trash cans during a severe storm. Chloe braved the elements until a neighbor heard her crying and went to investigate. “The lady thought she looked like Gigi's same breed, so she called me to ask if I would take her, and I did,” Gidget says. Upon their respective arrivals, Gigi and Chloe immediately became a vital part of the Sauceda family.

Both pups are special to Gidget, but Gigi has a unique story of resilience. She lost her sight when she was about 7 years old due to cataracts, requiring a visit to an animal eye specialist. The specialist successfully removed her cataracts and inserted lenses in both of her eyes so that she could see again, just like the procedure done for humans.

Gidget notes that both Gigi and Chloe are incredibly smart. “When I leave the house, Gigi will go into my closet, grab one of my shoes, drag it into her bed, and lay on top of it,” she says. “I guess she misses me.” She also jokes that she catches flak from her friends for how well she feeds her dogs. Their diet consists of fresh vegetables mixed with ground chicken and venison, and on days when she runs out of their regular food, she gladly scrambles some eggs for them.

In addition to their healthy meals, Gigi and Chloe both love yogurt treats and Maria cookies. Chloe is particularly fond of stuffed toys, getting excited whenever a new one arrives, and she always looks completely relaxed when she is sleeping or lounging around. Aside from their indoor comforts, both girls look forward to going on their daily walk around Lake Windcrest.

Gidget’s favorite memories with Chloe and Gigi are the simple moments they share together. As an early bird, Gidget truly enjoys her mornings beginning around 5:30 or 6:00 a.m., drinking coffee with both of her girls right next to her. In those sweet, quiet moments, the pups look deeply into her eyes, with Chloe offering a special gaze that seems to say, “Thank you for rescuing me.” Sometimes love is loud, with barking, licking, and playing, but sometimes love is in a look—a look that says so much in those big puppy dog eyes. They may not be able to say it with words, but Gigi and Chloe always let Gidget know how much they love her. The feeling is mutual.
