Cooking Up Connection "Beyond the Plate" With the Brinkers

Meet the Brinker family! This past October, Jason and Hannah Brinker of Lopatich-Brinker Funeral Home, LLC, hosted their third "Beyond the Plate: Cooking for One" workshop at the Latrobe Art Center. The evening brought together individuals coping with loss, providing not only practical cooking skills but also a sense of community and healing.

The event, held on October 23, was met with heartfelt participation and filled the venue with laughter, camaraderie, and the warmth of shared stories. Participants gathered around hot plates, guided by Laura Augustine and her son, Scot, who led the hands-on cooking demonstration. Together, they prepared a fall-inspired meal while learning tips for planning, shopping, and cooking for one—a task that can feel daunting after the loss of a loved one.

Jason Brinker, the owner and director of Lopatich-Brinker Funeral Home, told the Latrobe Bulletin: “It was truly moving to see everyone come together, share their experiences, and create something both nourishing and meaningful. It’s a reminder that even in grief, there is space for connection and joy.”

During the workshop, participants also had the opportunity to share memories of their loved ones. Laura Augustine encouraged conversations by asking attendees about favorite foods and dishes they used to prepare together, creating an atmosphere of shared remembrance and support.

As with past workshops, the Brinkers provided all materials and ingredients. The free program also included recipe cards and practical advice for adjusting to cooking, shopping and eating for one.

“Our goal has always been to bridge the gap,” Hannah Brinker told the Latrobe Bulletin. “Grief doesn’t end with a funeral, and we want to offer continued support as people navigate their journey toward healing.”

Jason added, “These workshops are part of our commitment to helping the community move toward a ‘new normal’ where honoring a loved one’s memory goes hand in hand with self-care and resilience.”

The Brinkers have expressed their dedication to continuing and expanding these initiatives in the future. For those interested in joining future events, visit LopatichBrinker.com or contact them at (724) 537-2001 to learn more.
