Turning a Dream Into a Dance Movement

Sometimes the best ideas start with a lifelong friendship. For two Ledgeview residents, Eliza and Ava, that friendship began at just 8 years old in a dance class and grew into something much bigger than they ever imagined. From elementary school through college, they danced side by side, eventually coaching together and sharing a deep love for the sport. When they felt ready for their next chapter, they took a leap and created the De Pere Youth Dance Program, a new nonprofit built to bring dance opportunities back to their community.

Both founders are alumni of the De Pere Varsity Dance Team, a program that once played a major role in shaping who they are today. When that program came to an end, it left a noticeable gap. They knew firsthand the confidence, discipline, and friendships dance can build, and they felt called to make sure future generations wouldn’t miss out on those same experiences.
The De Pere Youth Dance Program is designed to give young dancers an accessible, competitive outlet right in their own community. Open to K-8 students, the program focuses on pom, jazz, hip hop, and traditional dance team technique. The season runs from June through January, with dancers training consistently and competing at both local and state levels across Wisconsin.
Launching the program was a bold move. As young coaches stepping into leadership roles, they could have easily stayed within established programs. Instead, they chose to step outside their comfort zones and build something from the ground up. That decision has already proven worthwhile.
One of the most meaningful moments came when they announced the program publicly. The overwhelming support from former De Pere dance teammates made it clear just how much this initiative meant. Hearing comments like, “We always knew if anyone was going to bring dance back to De Pere, it would be you two,” turned the experience into a full-circle moment.
The response from the community has been just as encouraging. Within the first 24 hours of sharing their interest form, more than 35 dancers signed up. That number has quickly grown to over 70, confirming what many suspected, there is a strong and eager group of young dancers ready for this opportunity.
While interest came easily, building the nonprofit behind the scenes presented new challenges. Navigating the logistics of forming a 501(c)(3), including IRS paperwork, bylaws, and tax requirements, was unfamiliar territory. Still, the process gave them a deeper appreciation for what it takes to run a successful program and strengthened their commitment to doing it right.
Support has poured in from all directions, including alumni, family, friends, former dancers they’ve coached, and community members who believe in their mission. That encouragement continues to fuel their vision as they work toward long-term success.
Right now, their focus is on building a strong foundation for the program and creating a positive, lasting experience for every dancer involved. Looking ahead, they have an even bigger dream: to grow the program enough to inspire the return of a Varsity Dance Team at De Pere High School.
For those looking to support, the message is simple. Spread the word. Share their posts, connect them with families, and help raise awareness. They are also actively seeking sponsors to help ensure a successful season.
