Eight Years Later, a Full Cup!
Hello, friends and neighbors!
Eight years. Sometimes I have to stop and say that out loud because it hardly seems possible!
As I prepare this November issue of Stroll Ledgeview, I pulled out something I haven't revisited in a while: my very first Publisher's Note. I was introducing myself to the residents of Ledgeview, sharing my excitement about this new neighborhood magazine, and hoping to create something people would look forward to sitting down with, relaxing, and enjoying each month.
I wrote about wanting to connect neighbors, celebrate families, share stories, and build a stronger sense of community. I invited you to stop me if you saw me out and about, introduce yourself, and let me meet your family.
And you know what? Eight years later, the heart of that message hasn't changed.
Back then, I was a busy mom of three, with kids who were 14, 12, and 5. I didn't have a background in journalism or publishing. What I did have was a love for people, a genuine interest in their stories, and a desire to build something meaningful right here in our community.
I couldn't have known then just how many families I would meet, how many stories we would share, or how much this magazine would become a part of my own story, too.
Over the years, we've celebrated new beginnings, family traditions, milestones, accomplishments, local athletes, beloved pets, beautiful homes, and the everyday moments that make life in Ledgeview special. We've introduced neighbors to neighbors and helped shine a light on the people and businesses that make our community what it is. Month after month, these pages have become a collection of memories, and I love knowing that some of you tuck your favorite issues away to look back on for years to come.
When I first started, I hoped you would love the magazine enough to want to share your own stories. Today, those stories are the very foundation of what we do. So many begin with a nomination, a recommendation, a photograph, or a neighbor simply saying, “You should meet this family!” That neighbor-to-neighbor spirit is what makes Stroll Ledgeview so special.
I've also learned a lot in eight years. I've learned that building a business takes patience, persistence, and a willingness to keep showing up. I've learned that relationships are built one conversation at a time, and that the connections we make can create opportunities and friendships we never expected. Most importantly, I've learned that community doesn't happen by accident. It happens when people take the time to know one another, celebrate one another, and support the people around them.
In that very first note, I also thanked the local business partners whose support made the magazine free to residents. That thank-you still stands, perhaps now with an even greater appreciation for what it takes to keep these pages coming to your mailbox. Our business partners make this publication possible, and I hope you'll remember them when you need a service, are looking for a recommendation, or have an opportunity to shop local. Your support helps keep our local business community strong.
As we head into our eighth year in print, I find myself feeling incredibly grateful. Grateful for every family who has welcomed us into their lives, every resident who has shared a story or nominated a neighbor, every business partner who has believed in this publication, and every reader who has taken the time to turn a page.
I also think about that younger version of myself who wrote the very first note. She was excited, a little unsure of everything ahead, and hopeful that this magazine would become something meaningful. If I could go back and tell her one thing, it would be this: Keep showing up. Keep asking questions. Keep connecting people. The relationships you build along the way will become one of the most rewarding parts of the journey.
Eight years later, I'm still doing what I set out to do. I'm still telling stories, still making connections, and still believing that the people and businesses right here in our own backyard deserve to be celebrated.
As we enter this season of gratitude, I hope you'll take a moment to reach out to a neighbor, thank a local business owner, share a family memory, or nominate someone whose story deserves to be told. You never know what one small gesture might mean to someone else.
And if you see me out in the community, please still stop and say hello! I'd love to hear what's new with you and your family. After all, that invitation from my very first Publisher's Note still stands.
Thank you for being part of this journey and for allowing me to tell your stories for the past eight years. I am so proud of what we've built together, and I can't wait to see what stories the next chapter brings. Enjoy the pages of this issue which are filled with new stories, some treasured memories and some beautiful photos captured around the neighborhood. We love what we do, and we love publishing your magazine each and every month!
With gratitude,
Mandi Wilke
