Exploring Alaska’s Untamed Beauty with Nancy and Johnny Jones

For Nancy and Johnny Jones, travel has always been a shared adventure, but their latest journey took them far from their usual sandy getaways. In June 2025, the couple traded palm trees for towering peaks as they spent two unforgettable weeks exploring the breathtaking landscapes of Alaska.
“We’re trying to see a new place every year,” Nancy shared. “Before retirement, we typically did beach trips because we needed the R&R. My husband is still busy, but he’s able to get away for longer adventures now.” Johnny works with schools, helping band, orchestra, and sports programs raise funds. “World’s Finest Chocolate is a favorite with kids,” Nancy added with a smile.
Their Alaskan adventure began on land, where they stayed at Denali and the Alyeska Lodge. “Both were beautiful,” Nancy said. “Denali was insanely beautiful, and the untouched nature was amazing.” The second week brought new scenery as they boarded a cruise that took them to several coastal stops. A highlight of the trip was a private yacht whale-watching excursion in Juneau, followed by a floatplane tour and “Taste of Alaska” experience in Ketchikan. “My husband loved the floatplane!” Nancy said.
Along the way, they sampled some of Alaska’s most famous cuisine, including fresh salmon and Alaskan King Crab. They also immersed themselves in the state’s fascinating history. “The 1964 earthquake was something we were really surprised to learn about,” Nancy noted. “There’s just so much about Alaska that’s still wild and uninhabitable.”
Fortunately, their timing couldn’t have been better. “We lucked out with incredible weather, which isn’t always the case,” Nancy said. “If you want to see bears, salmon, and whales in abundance, go later in the season. We went early and liked not having the huge crowds. It’s a give and take.” When asked if they would return, Nancy didn’t hesitate. “Yes, in a heartbeat.”
For anyone considering a trip to Alaska, she has one piece of advice: “There’s so much to offer, so do your research before you go. We loved having a travel agent plan every aspect for us—it made the experience seamless.”
From Denali’s majestic peaks to the sparkling waters of Ketchikan, the Joneses discovered that Alaska offers something more than just stunning views. It’s a reminder of the beauty that still exists untouched, waiting for those ready to explore it.
