Meet the Sharma Kapila Family!
A Global Story Rooted in Lake Forest
Lake Forest has been home to the Sharma Kapila family since 2016, when Dr. Rohini Sharma and Dr. Abhishek Kapila bought their very first house. The community quickly felt like the perfect place to begin raising a family. Today, they share that home with their daughter Riya, age 8, their son Arjun, age 5, Abhishek’s father Dr. Sarjiwan Kapila, and their beloved eleven-year-old Lab German mix, Brady, whom Rohini lovingly calls "my first baby."
The family’s background spans continents. Rohini was born in London, England and grew up in Dallas, while Abhishek was born and raised in Ludhiana, India. Their children were born right here in Louisville and now attend Kentucky Country Day School. Rohini says simply, "Louisville is a perfect blend of the north and the south full of love and culture."
The couple’s love story began in 2011 in Chandigarh, India, where they were both preparing for entrance exams into their respective programs. Rohini remembers, "We saw each other hardly six times, then we had a long-distance relationship for a year." After marrying in a small Pittsburgh temple, they skipped a honeymoon entirely. "Instead of going on our honeymoon, we went back to preparing for our interviews and exams the next day," she tells us. Their programs took them to Tennessee and Kentucky, leading to a three-year long-distance marriage before finally settling in Louisville. When they found Lake Forest, Rohini knew this would be their first and forever home.
Their careers are equally inspiring. Rohini is a general dentist and the founder of The Dental Bar, a practice born from a decade of listening closely to patient fears. She said, "I would always hear patients say that they hated going to the dentist or have bad experiences." Over time she realized, "It's not me that they hate. It's what we do, the shots, the sounds, the fear of being judged." So, she set out to reinvent the experience. "I decided to build a safe space, where people can come and experience dentistry from a more empathetic and compassionate way, along with a little laughter."
Her husband Abhishek is an Internal Medicine physician with his own concierge practice, Kapila Concierge Medicine, and also works full time at Baptist East Hospital, St. Matthews.
Riya and Arjun stay active with a full slate of activities. Both attend Russian School of Math and play soccer with LouCity. Arjun also swims with Genesis and plays basketball with the YMCA, while Riya performs traditional Punjabi Bhangra during the annual Baisakhi event at the University of Louisville.
Their cultural traditions run deep. Rohini explained, "Our family origins are from India. It’s a land of festivals, culture, dance and much more." They celebrate Holi, Vaisakhi, Raksha Bandhan, Diwali, Halloween, and Christmas, filling their home with color, ritual, and joy.
Food is a beloved part of family life. Rohini laughed, "Our family loves to eat!" Dad is the chef at home, but they frequently enjoy meals at Guacamole Modern Mexicana, Tandoori Fusion, Capital Grille, and Malones.
Travel is another shared passion. Favorites include Mexico and London, especially for the beaches and all-inclusive resorts. A recent trip to Dallas held special meaning, as the kids saw their mother’s name in a temple restored through donations made by their grandmother in the early nineties. The family also loves visiting relatives in Washington DC, Charlotte, and Chicago.
Community involvement is important to the family, who donate to Dare to Care and the YMCA’s cancer and Parkinson’s programs at the Northeast location. They have also sponsored the Lyndon Summer Fest kids train ride, supported KCD, and sponsored the PRP High School cheer team.
When asked what they love most about Lake Forest, Rohini said, "We love living in this neighborhood for its strong sense of community, friendly neighbors, and welcoming atmosphere." She appreciates that kids can ride bikes safely, enjoy the parks, and attend events throughout the year. With pools, tennis courts, basketball courts, and the lodge, their kids love being in Lake Forest.
A passion for community is part of what inspired Rohini to shape The Dental Bar into something more than a traditional dental office. She designed it intentionally as a space where patients feel cared for the moment they walk in, offering thoughtful touches like a beverage bar, cozy amenities, and an atmosphere that feels relaxed rather than clinical. Rohini says the goal is to help people feel excited about taking care of their teeth, not anxious about it.
At The Dental Bar, patients are greeted with fun, signature drinks like Molar Mojito, Gum Tonic, and Fluoride Fizz, and can settle in with blankets, headphones, or weighted comfort items. Rohini describes it as "a lounge-like experience," a space that combines excellent clinical care with warmth and a sense of connection. As she likes to say, "Because dentistry should be a vibe!"
This January, we are thrilled to introduce the Sharma Kapila family, a vibrant blend of culture, compassion, joy, and service that enriches our Lake Forest community.
