Making Waves: Meet Liam Langford
For 12-year-old Liam Langford, swimming is more than just a sport. “Swimming is everything!” he says, and his dedication to the pool certainly backs that up.
Liam has lived in the neighborhood since August 2021 and is homeschooled, which gives him the flexibility to balance his schoolwork with a busy competitive swimming schedule. He lives with his parents, Blake and Kim Langford, and his 6-year-old sister, Emerson.
Liam first joined the Lake Forest Swim Team in the summer of 2022 as a way to get to know more kids in the neighborhood. He quickly discovered that swimming was something he truly loved. That fall, he joined Triton and began his journey into competitive swimming. He is especially grateful to Coach Olivia at Lake Forest for introducing him to the world of competitive swimming.
For Liam, one of the best parts of the sport is seeing his hard work pay off. He loves competing, challenging himself, improving his times, and setting new personal goals. He also enjoys being part of a team, spending time with his friends, and traveling to meets. In fact, many of his closest friends are swimmers, so he gets to see them at practice every day.
His dedication has already led to some impressive accomplishments. Liam has worked hard to qualify for the Kentucky State Championships and has earned medals at State each year. His biggest swimming accomplishment so far, however, was being selected to represent Team Kentucky at the Southern Zone Age Group Championships.
Being chosen for Team Kentucky was an exciting experience for Liam, especially getting the opportunity to compete against some of the best swimmers from across the South. He made the experience even more memorable by swimming personal best times at Zones. Now, he is focused on working even harder in the coming year, hoping to improve and earn another opportunity to represent Team Kentucky as he moves into an older age group.
Liam says his competitiveness and willingness to work hard are what set him apart in the pool. He is always watching his times, setting new goals, and looking for ways to improve. Even when a practice or race gets difficult, giving up is not really an option. Instead, he is already thinking about what he can do better the next time he gets in the water.
Swimming is not his only form of training. Liam works on his conditioning through athletic training at Athletic Republic and also participates in a homeschool CrossFit program at CrossFit Bluegrass. Balancing everything with school can get busy, especially during meet season, but homeschooling gives him the flexibility to complete his schoolwork earlier in the day and focus on swimming when it is time for practice. He also makes sure there is still time for family and friends.
When it comes to swimming role models, Liam looks up to one of the greatest swimmers of all time, Michael Phelps. He admires everything Phelps accomplished and the amount of work he put in to reach those goals. Seeing Phelps continue to push himself and refuse to give up when things were difficult motivates Liam to do the same.
After high school, Liam hopes to continue swimming in college. He has not decided what he wants to study yet, but he knows swimming will be part of his plans. He wants to keep working hard, see how far he can take the sport, and pursue bigger goals along the way.
And just how big are those goals?
“I’d love to make the Olympic team!”
With Liam’s competitive spirit, determination, and willingness to put in the work, we have a feeling he is just getting started.
