Henderson Champions Power of Communication Through Toastmasters

Katie Henderson has found a special connection to Toastmasters through her sister's remarkable 15-year journey with the organization. Though Katie lives in Lochmere with her husband Art and their sons Declan and Lincoln, she enthusiastically shares how Toastmasters has transformed her sister's life and many others.

"My sister originally joined to overcome her extreme fear of public speaking," Katie explains. "But she's stayed all this time because Toastmasters is so much more than giving speeches."

Since moving to Lochmere in 2015, Katie has witnessed her sister's growth through the organization founded by Ralph C. Smedley in 1924. What began as a collaborative learning environment for young men to master public speaking has evolved into a global community with nearly 8 million members across 148 countries and territories.

Katie's sister exemplifies the Toastmasters journey. Beyond conquering her fear of speaking publicly, she has embraced leadership opportunities by serving as a club officer multiple times, leading speech contests, and organizing membership drives. Her development culminated in leading a workshop with 25 of her employer's top customers and presenting to 400 people at their annual Sales Kick Off event.

"Her favorite thing about Toastmasters is the many opportunities to help others grow," Katie shares. "That can be as simple as giving a helpful evaluation to a speaker, coaching someone on how to be more comfortable with impromptu talks, or being a mentor for a new member."

The impact of Toastmasters extends far beyond podiums and speeches. Members develop skills in interview preparation, project management, conflict resolution, online meeting facilitation, leadership development, and networking. The organization's mission provides a supportive learning experience where members develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.

For Lochmere residents interested in experiencing these benefits firsthand, the Carylina Toastmasters club meets every Monday at 7 p.m. at Resurrection Lutheran Church on West Lochmere Drive. Katie highlights an upcoming special event: "May 19th is Pitch Night at Carylina Toastmasters."

Katie's enthusiasm for Toastmasters reflects her love for the Lochmere community itself. "We have so much love for Lochmere," she says. "There's such a sense of community here. Our neighbors became friends, and our children all play together."

Through her sister's inspiring Toastmasters journey, Katie Henderson reminds us that finding our voice can lead to unexpected growth and connection. "Give it a try," she encourages, "and see where it takes you!"
