BOGLEN BUDDIES

Scottie

What should we know about you, Ollie & Scottie? We’re not just Boglen buddies, we’re Boglen bros! AND we’re next-door neighbors! Our moms, Alex Birley and Katie Van der Voort, found us at the BTRNT – Boston Terrier Rescue of North Texas - https://www.texasbostons.com/site/ when we were just a coupla months old. Both Alex and Katie, who are friends and neighbors, had each recently lost a much loved pet. So together they came to BTRNT looking to wash away their tears and find a new precious pet to love. There they saw us together, brothers we. They took one look at our joint adorableness and said, ‘you’re coming with us!’ Now at almost two years old, we’ve been snugglin’ down on McCommas ever since.
What is the story behind your breed? Boglen Boston Terriers are a mix between a beagle (think Snoopy) and a Boston Terrier (think "American Gentleman" with a tuxedo-like coat). We are considered a prize find because we’re so well adapted, well adjusted and well suited for family life. Everyone loves us.
What is your playtime routine? We officially have a standing playdate once a week, but since we live right next door to each other, we have multiple unannounced opportunities for visits, and across the fence ‘conversations’ and ‘sensory connections’. Whenever we’re together in person, we immediately begin our ongoing game of ‘knock over the other brother.’ We are always game to dethrone whoever the current reigning champion is. This is the only activity during our time together.
Fun Fact? Beagles have a highly evolved sense of smell. While humans have 5 million scent receptors in their olfactory, we beagles have 220 million! Impressive, right? And we use this superpower for the good of all man- and dog-kind. In addition to helping the medical community early-detect diseases such as lung cancer (with high rates of accuracy), we are equally adapted to knowing where all snacks are kept.
Any hidden talents? My brother Ollie is famous for the ability to juggle a toy with his four paws while lying on his back. He belongs in the circus. And although I’m not sure if this qualifies as a talent, I, Scottie, have mastered a great disappearing act which happens nightly and is not to be missed. Immediately after dinner I stealthily make my way to the master bedroom where I hunker down under the covers and burrow my way to the foot of the bed. Nobody knows I’m there.
Any funny stories, Ollie? Due to my super sensitive nose, I am extremely food-motivated. Therefore I decided to put myself on a diet and get on the Ozempic bandwagon that’s so on-trend these days. I have to say that syringe did not taste as good as I thought it would. Thank goodness the needle had already been removed, and most of the contents consumed. But I am looking pretty trim these days. So, ‘was it worth it?’ you may ask? Absolutely!
Another fun-for-you-story is that Alex once had to rush me to the vet thinking I had eaten something bad for me. After the evacuation procedure was complete, they discovered the secret treat I had eaten days before - a toy soldier-sized dinosaur. Man, that didn’t taste very good either.
What about you, Scottie. Any hobbies? My favorite pastime is hiding bones around the house. All over the house. Everywhere.
What else should we know about the two of you, Ollie & Scottie? Even though we’re brothers, our Moms say they can tell us apart by our voices. We each have unique vocalizations for the ‘I’ve seen a squirrel’ notification; the ‘the mail has just arrived’ notice; and the baritone bark that warns ‘another dog is approaching – another dog is approaching!’
But the best alerts we sound out are the ones that say, “I love you – come pet me”; “I love you – is my brother still here?”; and “I love you – can I have a treat?”. But the song we love to howl out the most, and is both our favorite song which we sing to our moms is, “I love you. I love you. I love you.”
