Striking the Right Note: How Freestyle Therapy Is Changing Lives
Dallas therapist Cassandra Holt Kimbell blends clinical expertise with a musician’s touch to create a healing space that feels personal, creative, and deeply supportive.
Freestyle Therapy LLC is quietly reshaping the mental health landscape in Dallas. At its center is founder Cassandra Holt Kimbell, a counselor and singer-songwriter whose blend of clinical expertise and creative intuition offers clients a truly distinctive experience. Located at 4849 Greenville Ave., Suite 100, her practice provides support that is both grounded and refreshingly personal.
A Dallas native, Kimbell built her career through a mix of musical exploration and intensive clinical training. After moving to Long Beach, California, to focus on music, she completed 3,000 clinical intern hours—an experience that honed her skills and broadened her perspective. She later returned to Dallas to be closer to family, ultimately planting the seeds for what would become Freestyle Therapy.
Today, Kimbell lives in East Dallas and sees clients at Energy Square, where she specializes in working with neurodivergent individuals across Texas and California. Her services include individual and group therapy, EMDR intensives, and autism and ADHD assessments. Her wide range of offerings allows her to tailor care to each client’s strengths, challenges, and goals.
Kimbell’s background as a musician gives her an instinctive ability to connect with people. Her sessions emphasize empathy, creativity, and a sense of safety—qualities that have become hallmarks of her practice. Psychologist Monica Elizabeth Williams speaks highly of Kimbell’s approach, noting, “Cassandra has a way of connecting with her clients that allows them to feel safe and cared for. This is especially necessary when working to overcome trauma with clients.”
Client feedback echoes that sentiment. One particularly heartfelt message read: “Best therapist ever, and real! Probably kept me alive 3/23 to 3/24 no lie. Love and support you always Cassie.” These reflections speak to the depth of the relationships she builds and the life-changing nature of her work.
Outside the office, Kimbell leads a vibrant family life. She is married to a cardiac nurse at UT Southwestern—“between the two of us, we’ve got the whole body covered,” she jokes, "he can help from the neck down and I can help from the neck up." They share a home with their creative 4-year-old daughter and a vocal, cuddly cat named Nochi. Her personal world is just as eclectic as her professional one.
Music remains a steady thread throughout her life. Kimbell was recently named Best Songwriter in Dallas at the Dallas Entertainment Awards, an honor that highlights her ability to move people both in and out of the therapy room. Gardening, vegetable growing, and a love of crime shows offer a counterbalance to her busy schedule and help her recharge.
Freestyle Therapy also provides telehealth services, expanding access for clients who may need flexibility or distance-based support. This commitment to accessibility, combined with her creative perspective, makes Kimbell’s practice a meaningful resource for many in the community.
As Freestyle Therapy continues to grow, Kimbell remains dedicated to the intersection of art and mental health—a space where she helps clients find clarity, resilience, and connection. Her work is a reminder that healing isn’t one-size-fits-all; sometimes it sounds like compassion, insight, and just the right note of creativity.
