Keeping the Beat: Meet Woodrow Wilson’s Caitlin Schmidt
Band director, mentor, and musician shaping the next generation—on and off the stage.
In honor of CATFest 2025 this month, we’re excited to spotlight Caitlin Schmidt, Band Director at Woodrow Wilson High School. With 15 years of experience in education, she’s dedicated to shaping young musicians while keeping learning fun and engaging. Get to know more about Caitlin and what drives her passion for teaching!
How long have you been in education, and where have you taught? I’ve been teaching for 15 years. I started at A+ Academy in 2010, working with students from kindergarten through 12th grade. From there, I spent over a decade at J.L. Long Middle School before moving to Woodrow Wilson High School in 2022.
How would you describe your teaching and leadership style? Building connections with students is incredibly important to me. I lead by example and set high standards, but I also believe in being understanding. I have firm rules, but I remind my students that we’re all human—we all make mistakes.
What’s your favorite part of teaching? Every day is different! I love that I get to learn alongside my students while making music and creating something new with them each day.
Do you have an educator who inspired you? Yes! My former band directors, Mr. Aguillon and Mr. Killingsworth, and my AP U.S. History teacher, Mr. Thomas, had a huge impact on me. They were so passionate and stayed connected with their students long after graduation. I actually still work with Mr. Aguillon—he’s now at SMU!
Do you have a favorite quote or mantra?I love this quote from Darwin Martin: “A teacher’s job is to take a bunch of live wires and see that they are well-grounded.”
How do you spend your time outside of school? Music is a big part of my life outside the classroom, too! I’m in a band with my dad called Acoustic Audiophile, where we play acoustic covers from different decades. I also have a family rock band, The Squeaky Struts, and we perform at CATFest each year. When I’m not playing music, my boyfriend, Tyler, and I love riding our tandem bike and going on adventures in state and national parks.
Where might we find you around town? I’m a big coffee person, so Starbucks and White Rock Coffee are my go-to spots. I also love grabbing a bite at Meso Maya, Mi Cocina, The Heights, and Birdie’s—especially after school events!
If you see Caitlin around the neighborhood, be sure to congratulate her on all the incredible work she’s doing for students in our community!
