The Neighbor You Call When Technology Doesn't Cooperate

For Ron Elkin, every visit is an opportunity to solve problems, reduce frustration, and help neighbors move forward with confidence. And for Ron and the Computer Doctor, it’s been this way for 25 years and counting.

Technology has changed dramatically over the last few decades. For many of us, keeping up with it can feel like a full-time job.

For Ron, founder of Computer Doctor, that's exactly what has made the work so rewarding.

Long before computers became a fixture in every home, Ron was helping friends and local teachers learn how to use this new technology. What began as a side passion in the mid-1990s—training educators, recommending software, and solving everyday computer challenges—was simply something he enjoyed doing. It wasn't meant to become a business. Then life presented a new opportunity.

Ron spent years in a corporate environment, managing technology in an array of industries, driving the use and implementation of technology.  Ultimately in the late 90’s  with Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), and later through the company's transitions to Compaq and Hewlett-Packard, Ron's team was transitioned during industry restructuring in 2001. Remember the “dot com” crash? Instead of seeing it as an ending, he saw it as the beginning of something new.

"I'd already been helping people for years," Ron shares. "It just felt like the right time to do it on my own full time."

Twenty-five years later, the Computer Doctor continues to do exactly what it set out to do: help people and businesses feel more confident and secure with using technology, and to acquire new components for continued success.

What makes Ron's approach different is that he rarely sees a computer problem as just a computer problem. Someone may call because their printer isn't working, but Ron knows the real solution often requires looking at the bigger picture. How is the computer being used? Is the home office organized efficiently? Are there easier ways to accomplish everyday tasks? Could a few small changes save time and frustration? "It's a holistic approach," he explains. "We look at the whole system, people and technology."

That philosophy has become the foundation of the Computer Doctor. Rather than simply repairing devices, Ron and his team help homeowners and small businesses improve the way technology fits into their lives. It's less about fixing computers and more about solving problems and embracing change.

Today, the Computer Doctor serves clients throughout Essex County and southern New Hampshire, making house calls from Newburyport to Lynn and nearly everywhere in between. While technology continues to evolve—from desktop computers to smartphones to artificial intelligence—Ron views every advancement the same way: as another tool that can help people work smarter when it's used thoughtfully.

Just as important as solving technical issues is helping clients understand what happened in the first place and to move forward confidently.

Education has always been part of Ron's work. He has taught computer courses through adult education programs and continues to believe that one-on-one guidance is often the best way for people to gain confidence with technology."The goal is never to make someone feel uncomfortable because they don't know something," he says. "It's to help them learn."

That patient, approachable style reflects the values Ron learned growing up in a family-owned pharmacy business outside Philadelphia, where customer care was simply part of everyday life. Combined with more than four decades in technology, it has shaped a business built on trust, professionalism, and long-term relationships.

When he's not helping clients troubleshoot computers or improve their business systems, Ron enjoys spending time on the North Shore, especially near the ocean. A lifelong sailor and avid tennis player, he has found the same sense of connection here that has kept so many of his clients returning year after year.

For Ron, technology will continue to change and his efforts will continue to grow and evolve. Helping people navigate it with confidence will never end.
