Meet Levi: The Tatum Family’s Four-Legged Star
Named after a Bible verse meaning “joined in harmony,” Levi charms kids, golfers, and delivery drivers alike with his playful antics and boundless energy.
We’ve lived in Marietta Country Club twice since 2001, during which time we’ve enjoyed two different homes that we’ve lovingly renovated. One of the things we love most about our neighborhood is the beautiful golf course and mountain views - especially when we’re out walking with our dog, Levi. We named him after a Bible verse. Levi means “joined in harmony,” which feels just right because he brings our family - and even many in the neighborhood - so much joy and togetherness.
Levi came into our lives when he was just nine weeks old. We first spotted his picture on Petfinder.com and instantly knew he was the one. He had been rescued by the Dalton Humane Society, who ran a DNA test that revealed his unique mix of Carolina Dog, Alaskan Husky, and Retriever. Each part of his heritage shines through - his protective and loyal nature, striking eyes and curly tail, and his Retriever-like love for golf balls. In fact, he’s become something of a legend (or maybe infamous!) with the golfers here for his habit of finding stray balls that land in our backyard.
At four years old, Levi has become more than just our family pet - he’s the heart of our neighborhood. The kids next door often come by asking to play with him, and even our mail carrier and delivery drivers stop to give him treats. He truly has his own fan club!
Levi is full of quirks and talents. He loves retrieving tennis balls, sniffing flowers in our garden, and, of course, hunting down lost golf balls. Meal time is another show altogether - he insists on having shredded parmesan cheese sprinkled on his food and won’t eat until he gets it. He even recognizes the words “parmesan cheese” and grins once it’s added! If we’re too slow to figure out what he wants, he’ll “talk” to us with his eyes and little sounds until we get the message.
One of our favorite memories is watching Levi play in the sprinklers with neighbor Palmer and her friend. He runs in big circles like a racehorse, entertaining the girls and soaking up every laugh. He also loves spending time with our daughter Katie and her husband Josh and his “cousin dogs,” Yogi and Caddy, and shows off in a gentle way with his little neighbor dog Sophie.
When he’s not playing, Levi often sits at the corner of our backyard, watching golfers and waiting for the chance to retrieve their balls. He also absolutely loves riding in the truck - he lights up the moment Gregory says, “Do you want to go for a ride?” and races to the garage door ready for an adventure, even if it’s just a quick errand or a trip to Farmer John’s.
If Levi could pick his dream day, it would definitely be running free at the club’s practice range, with endless golf balls to chase and plenty of greenie treats as a reward. Until then, he’s more than happy going on daily walks, hanging out with his neighborhood friends, and keeping us laughing every day. His name, Levi, truly fits him—he is the perfect little companion, “joined in harmony” with everyone he meets.
