Charlotte Ecton

Through pursuing volunteer opportunities and joining various volunteer organizations, Shawnee Mission East Senior and Mission Hills resident Charlotte Ecton has been able to embed herself in her community, help people all over Kansas City, and develop a love for philanthropy.

In 7th grade, Charlotte Ecton joined the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the National Charity League with her mom and twin sister, Adelaide Ecton, hoping to expose herself to more volunteer opportunities.

From this, she quickly discovered how much she loved volunteering and began to search for more philanthropic opportunities when she entered high school. She soon discovered SHARE, Shawnee Mission East’s volunteer program, Link Crew and Family, and Career and Community Leaders of America, which all allowed her to deepen her involvement in philanthropy.

“I’ve really enjoyed meeting new people, and I’ve learned that volunteering is a great way to develop confidence,” Charlotte said. “Volunteering experiences have helped me develop stronger self-esteem, allowing me to step out of my comfort zone. Through many volunteer opportunities, I’ve learned the significance of empathy and compassion, understanding people’s various needs and how even small acts of kindness can make an impact.”

And her passion for service hasn’t gone unnoticed. During her junior year, she received the Silver Presidential Service Award for over 200 hours of community service in a 12-month period. That same year, she was inducted into East’s National Honor Society for her academic and philanthropic achievements.

Along with consistent volunteering, Charlotte is also on the Varsity bowling team and takes multiple AP classes, but her busy schedule isn’t an issue.

“Directly after school, I go home and do the time-consuming work to ensure that when I return from practice or an activity, I won’t be overwhelmed with homework,” Charlotte said. “I’ve built good study habits that make sure I don’t procrastinate on my work. This helps make time for a social life and doesn’t leave me in a pinch when I’m busy.”

Next year, Charlotte plans on studying aerospace and aeronautical engineering while continuing her community service wherever she goes.
