Lacrosse and Volleyball star!

Clara Geoghegan

I am on the Saint Stephen’s volleyball team, was on the FCA team for travel ball, and am on the Saint Stephen's girls lacrosse team. I've traveled to South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia for travel volleyball tournaments. Volleyball and Lacrosse have taught me to value teamwork, as well as putting in a lot of effort on and off the field/court.

I love the defensive aspects of both volleyball and lacrosse. There's no better feeling than the adrenaline rush when saving a penalty shot in lacrosse or stuff blocking a team’s best hitter in volleyball.

One of my favorite moments playing volleyball was when we played at East Lincoln High School. They had already beaten us at home, and on paper, they were expected to win. However, our team came together that day and played an amazing game, beating them in three sets. You could tell that every girl on the court wanted it bad, and that was the most I've ever seen our team hustle.

My favorite mentors would have to be all of my high school coaches. Coach Crump and Coach McNally, my lacrosse coaches, have taught me a great deal. Coach Clark, my volleyball coach, is incredibly kind, and it's clear that she has a genuine love for the sport. She even plays with us sometimes, and it’s only fair to say that she is a better hitter than anyone in the gym when she steps onto the court.

I look up to Asjia O’Neal. She is a Middle Blocker who plays for the Texas Longhorns. I like her quote, “I’ll take the yellow cards any day if that means more girls can play with that passion”. I also look up to Simeon Nikolov, who plays for Long Beach State University, and made the Olympics at 17 years old.

I would love to play either sport at a college level. I haven't looked into the recruiting process yet, but I'm sure I will as soon as I'm in season again. It's my dream to play D1 or D2 for a school that I like in either volleyball or lacrosse.

My advice for someone beginning is that starting the sport is always the most challenging part. One of my biggest regrets is quitting lacrosse in my freshman year because I would be further along if I had started sooner. Another thing is to try not to compare yourself negatively to other players. There will always be a player who is faster, smarter, or better than you, but that doesn’t mean that you have any less right to be on the team than they do.
