What it means to serve
America 250
John Brooks, Iraq 2005
Military service in the United States is a chance to give something back to our families, communities and nation by helping to defend our culture and values. It also provides service members with invaluable lessons in leadership, integrity, discipline, judgment, teamwork and sacrifice that guide them and those they associate with for the rest of their lives. Thank you, America, for the opportunity to serve in the United States Army!

As America prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, it is worth reflecting on a simple but powerful question: What does it mean to serve?
Service means putting something greater than yourself first. It means accepting responsibility, making sacrifices, and contributing to the well-being of others. Few examples of service are more visible than those demonstrated by the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
Military service is a commitment to protect the freedoms and opportunities that define our nation. It requires dedication, discipline, and a willingness to answer the call when needed. While service members come from different backgrounds and experiences, they share a common purpose: supporting and defending the country they love.
That commitment often continues long after military service ends. Veterans remain active contributors in their communities as parents, mentors, business owners, volunteers, and leaders. Their example reminds us that service is not confined to a uniform; it is a mindset that can shape an entire lifetime.
As we honor America 250, we recognize that our nation’s history has been built by generations of Americans willing to serve. Veterans are an important part of that story. Their sacrifices have helped preserve the freedoms we enjoy every day, and their continued contributions strengthen the communities we call home.
Honoring veterans means more than expressing gratitude. It means listening to their stories, recognizing their sacrifices, and carrying forward the values they represent: integrity, courage, selflessness, and commitment.
Ultimately, service is about leaving something better than you found it. As we celebrate 250 years of American history, may we remember those who answered the call to serve and find ways to serve our own families, neighborhoods, and communities.
